White House Takes New Step Toward Transparency

On Nov. 26, President Barack Obama signed the Presidential and Federal Records Act Amendments of 2014, a bill that amends the Presidential Records Act. This new law establishes “procedures for the consideration of claims of constitutionally based privilege against disclosure of Presidential records. …”

According to POLITICO, government lawyers will no longer be able to extend “the review of records of prior presidents that the National Archives has designated for release.” Now, presidents affected by the records have 60 business days to review them before the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) makes them public. NARA must give public notice of planned presidential records releases at the same time they are sent to the affected president for review.
