Survey Shows the Dangers of Counterfeit Products

Clarivate Analytics released the results of an online survey of consumers from 10 countries by MarkMonitor, which shows that counterfeit goods post a significant risk to purchasers. Findings included the following:
  • 27% of the respondents said they had unknowingly bought counterfeit goods—such as makeup, skincare items, supplements, and medication—online.
  • Respondents said 34% of these goods were found via search engines.
  • Brand websites were the most trusted source for non-counterfeit goods for 89% of consumers.
  • About 40% of respondents complained directly to the brand’s company about counterfeit products.

“The threat of counterfeiters is ever-present, affecting both brands and consumers. For brands it’s all about the loss of revenue, reputation and customer trust. However, when it comes to non-genuine consumer goods such as cosmetics, skincare, sun care and medicines, the consequences for shoppers are far greater, affecting their health and wellbeing. As a result, it is up to brands to ensure they have a solid online brand protection policy in place to deal with the counterfeit threat and keep their customers safe from harm,” says Anil Gupta, MarkMonitor’s CMO.
