Royal Society of Chemistry Acquires MarinLit Database

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) completed its acquisition of MarinLit, a cloud-based marine natural product (MNP) database designed to help scientists find a starting point for MNP research.

John Blunt, Murray Munro, and others at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand developed MarinLit 25 years ago as a support system for chemists. MarinLit offers bibliographic data on MNP literature and a collection of terms that are searchable individually or in various combinations.

Blunt and Munro felt it was “time to pass over the responsibility” of the database, says Munro. They agreed to RSC’s offer of acquisition based on the society’s “strengths in developing web-based knowledge delivery systems.”

MarinLit is a “strategic fit with our current activities and natural product research,” such as the Natural Product Reports journal, according to David James, RSC executive director of strategic innovation.

RSC will produce a web-based version of MarinLit in early 2014.
