ProQuest Expands Canadian Newspaper Coverage

ProQuest Co.'s Information and Learning unit has signed two new distribution agreements that will bring dozens of Canadian daily and weekly newspapers to Canadian Newsstand and other ProQuest databases. The new sets of newspapers—from CanWest and Torstar—broaden ProQuest's coverage of both Eastern and Western Canada. Content will be available once the data load is complete. The agreements allow ProQuest to distribute the newspaper content electronically to educational institutions, libraries, and other markets around the world.

The agreement with Torstar Media Group will bring the full text of the Toronto Star and more than 50 other Ontario newspapers to the company's ProQuest databases, including ProQuest Canadian Newsstand and select titles included in the eLibrary Canada/bigchalk Library Canada suite of K-12 products. The agreement includes all available electronic backfiles without embargoes or market restrictions. All of the newspapers will be available by subscription in Canadian Newsstand in three packages: as packaged subsets, major dailies packages, and a complete package, or as individual titles.

The agreement with CanWest Interactive, Inc. will bring the full text of 21 Canadian daily newspapers to the company's ProQuest databases. The new group of titles includes exclusive rights to distribute 10 Hollinger Canadian Newspapers, and non-exclusive rights to distribute 10 GTC Transcontinental papers, and the independent Whitehorse Star. The agreement includes all available electronic backfiles with a 1-week embargo on content.
