New Site for Design Research Launches
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the University of Minnesota formally launched InformeDesign, the "first centralized clearinghouse of design and human behavior research on the Web" (http://www.informedesign.umn.edu). The free site currently contains more than 240 research summaries of findings transformed from a variety of academic journals on design and human behavior. An additional 500 research summaries will be added each year.Visitors to InformeDesign can access the research summaries by performing simple, keyword searches or by reviewing the research summaries listed under three categories: "Space," "Issues," and "Occupants." The site also features online discussion forums, listings of collaborative research opportunities, a calendar of research-related events, and a glossary of terms. Implications, a monthly newsletter, will begin within the month, and other services and products are planned. The Web site is interactive, allowing visitors to provide comments about specific research summaries or other site issues, or to query the InformeDesign staff about individual research needs. The InformeDesign Web site was created and will be maintained by a team of researchers at the Department of Design, Housing and Apparel at the University of Minnesota, led by director Caren Martin, Ph.D., and Coordinator Denise Guerin, Ph.D. The impetus for InformeDesign was to create a device to facilitate design professionals' use of research as a decision-making tool in the design process, thereby improving the overall quality of design solutions to protect and enhance the public's health, safety, and welfare.
