Metafilter to Downsize Staff

Metafilter will lay off three of its moderators at the end of May. Founder Matthew Haughey explains, in a blog post, that a financial downturn during the past 18 months meant that staff members would need to be cut “to make up for budget shortfalls” while the company operates at a significant loss.

Haughey notes that Metafilter members can expect email response times to increase, borderline comments to be deleted, and reliance on the Metafilter community to flag items and model good behavior. “In general, we’re going to be trying different things out over time with the goal of letting us continue to maintain and support the site and community as best as possible with less overall moderator presence,” he writes.
