Historical Photography Collection Comes to Columbia University

Columbia University Libraries/Information Services’ Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library acquired the late Arthur Rothstein’s collection of photography prints and negatives, personal and professional papers, videos, and other materials, which were donated by his wife. Rothstein captured American and international events during the 20th century, from the Great Depression to the Reagan administration. He worked for organizations such as the Farm Security Administration and the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), as well as magazines such as Look and Parade.

“My mother, Grace Rothstein, and our entire family, is dedicated to seeing my father’s legacy of photojournalistic insight and integrity preserved as an example for future generations,” says Dan Rothstein. “Establishing a home for this collection at Columbia, where he studied and taught for many years, is a satisfying realization of that goal.”
