Gale Group Acquires FreeZone.com and Community-Building Technology

Gale Group (http://www.galegroup.com), a business unit of Thomson Corp., has assumed ownership of FreeZone.com (http://www.freezone.com), a Web site designed for kids. FreeZone.com was a division of Flywheel Media, also a division of Thomson (http://www.thomson.com). FreeZone is best known for its interactive elements and safety policies. The acquisition will enable both Gale Group and FreeZone to enhance their online services to kids, parents, and educators and expand their brands in new markets.

Gale Group also plans to add community building to its online reference works, creating environments that stimulate collaborative learning. Gale's presence in the school and public library market will enable the company to introduce FreeZone to teachers and librarians, building FreeZone's registered-user base. Additionally, FreeZone will tap Gale Group's content to strengthen its educational offerings for kids. This could be a model for a new level of service and features for traditional publishers.

"Integrating FreeZone into the Gale Group creates a powerful mix of skills," said Ben Mondloch, Gale Group's executive vice president of sales and marketing. "Our immediate, primary focus is on translating these skills so that both companies' products are introduced to new users and address a broader range of kids' needs on the Internet."
