Gale Acquires Newspaper Archives for NewsVault Platform

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, updated its Gale NewsVault platform with the Daily Mail Historical Archive, 1896-2004 and British Newspapers, Part III: 1780-1950. Gale now has 17 historical newspaper and periodical collections.

“By making these historical collections of newspapers available digitally and fully-searchable, research opportunities for students, faculty and even the curious genealogist” have deeply expanded, says Jim Draper, Gale's vice president and general manager.

The Daily Mail has been in circulation since 1896 and now reaches 2 million readers. Gale’s archive includes more than 1 million pages of news stories, features, advertisements, and images, as well as content from the Daily Mail Atlantic Edition, published on transatlantic (New York to Southampton) ocean liners from 1923 to 1931.

British Newspapers, Part III builds on content from the regional and local newspapers in the preceding collections from The British Library that date from the late 1700s. New sources include the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Leeds Intelligencer, Evening Telegraph, Yorkshire Gazette, Nottingham Evening Post, Newcastle Guardian, and Tyne Mercury.
