Cybrary City in Second Life to Showcase Library Resources

Talis Information, Ltd. (http://www.talis.com) and the Alliance Library System (ALS, http://www.alliancelibrarysystem.com) announced the debut of Cybrary City in Second Life, the 3-D virtual world built and owned by its residents. Cybrary City will be part of Info Island/Second Life Library services to provide a space for participating librarians to showcase their local resources. (See a report on Info Island in the Weblog for Internet Librarian at http://www.infotodayblog.com/2006/10/info-activities-gaining-over-sex-and.shtml.) With Cybrary City, there will also be an area for hosting continuing education events, conferences for librarians, and the development of information tools for the collaborative library.

If you would like to join the discussion about Cybrary City and the ways in which environments such as Second Life can enrich the offerings of your library, visit http://www.talis.com/tdn/forum/94. Alternatively, experience Second Life and visit Cybrary City via http://secondlife.com, or join the Alliance Second Life Google group to communicate with those already delivering services inside Second Life at http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alliancesecondlife. Cybrary City is not yet officially open, but it is available for viewing.

Talis is a provider of library and information management software to public and academic libraries. ALS is a multitype library system in East Peoria, Ill., that provides services to 259 libraries in a 14,000-square-mile area. ALS recently won second prize in the Talis Library Mashup Competition for the Alliance Second Life Library project (http://www.infotodayblog.com/2006/10/talis-presents-awards-for-mashing.shtml).
