Cambridge Information Group to Acquire ProQuest Information and Learning

Cambridge Information Group (CIG; announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire ProQuest Information and Learning (PQIL;, a segment of ProQuest Co. (, for about $222 million. CIG will combine its Bethesda, Md.-based CSA subsidiary ( with Ann Arbor, Mich.-based PQIL to create a new, privately held, independent company. The new company plans to continue operations in both locations. CIG is the parent company to CSA, R.R. Bowker, RefWorks, and Corporate Educational Services; the owner of Sotheby's Institute of Art; as well as the largest shareholder of Navtech, Inc.

Both CSA and PQIL offer library users access to electronic resources. The companies said they will serve a combined customer base of more than 25,000 library customers. CSA specializes in natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, and technology—areas that will complement PQIL's product lines (business, history, literature, and news).

PQIL comprises the following product brands: ProQuest, Chadwyck-Healey, UMI, Micromedia ProQuest, Serials Solutions, SIRS, eLibrary, and CultureGrams. Product brands within ProQuest Education, another part of ProQuest Co.—Voyager Expanded Learning, ProQuest Learning Page (Reading A-Z), and ExploreLearning—are not affected by the pending acquisition. ProQuest Co. recently completed the sale of its Business Solutions segment (automotive parts catalogs).
