HID Global Reaches Settlements in Patent Lawsuits
HID Global, a provider of secure identity solutions, settled its patent-infringement lawsuits against Apollo Security, Applied Wireless IDentifications Group, Inc. (AWID), and Secura Key.
The patents in the lawsuit included Programmable Channel Search Reader and Antenna Array for an RFID Reader Compatible With Transponders Operating at Different Carrier Frequencies. These patents are part of HID Global’s extended licensing program for RFID (radio frequency identification) reader manufacturers to license certain HID Global multitechnology intellectual property.
The terms of the settlements are confidential.

Associations Team Up for Research-Tracking Service
The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) received a joint $1 million grant from IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which will help ARL develop and launch the SHared Access Research Ecosystem (SHARE) notification service for tracking the releases of research results such as articles and data.
“At IMLS, we look for proposals with robust reach and deep, lasting impacts for the best ‘returns’ on our federal investment dollars. The SHARE initiative certainly meets those criteria,” says Susan H. Hildreth, IMLS’ director.
ARL, the Association of American Universities (AAU), and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) partnered to create SHARE using member institutions’ and stakeholders’ input. Their goal is to guarantee the preservation of, access to, and reuse of research outputs by making outputs more discoverable and accessible. The SHARE Notification System will be SHARE’s first project, with a planned full release in fall 2015.

LexisNexis Digital Library Offers ABA Ebooks
More than 200 ebooks from the American Bar Association (ABA) are now available through the LexisNexis Digital Library, a lending and library management platform for legal ebooks on any device. Digital Library subscribers can purchase access to and license ABA titles including Private Equity and Venture Capital Solutions to Common and Uncommon Tax Issues, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Handbook, and Grammar and Writing Handbook for Lawyers. Nonsubscribers can still access the same titles from the ABA Web Store.
“Digital libraries are always open and accessible. Having greater access to ABA titles helps attorneys across all practice areas become more efficient by enabling them to get the content they need quickly and easily, no matter where they are or what time it is,” says Robert Rupp, ABA’s associate executive director of business services.
Informa Divisions Agree to Merge
Two divisions of Informa, Informa Telecoms & Media and Ovum, will merge under the Ovum brand to enhance analysis across the IT, media, and telecom industries and to develop new research, market data, and consulting solutions for customers. The combined business intends to introduce new research channels such as customer engagement, enterprise mobility, and digital media, as well as to create a new online delivery platform for all research.
The merger is expected to be completed by the end of May. Steve Hotham, currently Ovum’s managing director, will become CEO when the businesses are fully integrated.
LAC Group Introduces Library as a Service
LAC Group, an information management solutions provider, launched its Library as a Service (LaaS) platform. LaaS includes a flexible, configurable, and on-demand suite of tools to help law firms and corporations conduct research, integrate an ILS, streamline research management, and more. It also offers services such as traditional on-site staffing with LAC Group’s network of researchers, librarians, and information specialists in North America and the U.K.
The automatic listening platform Manzama will power LaaS with its competitive intelligence engine. Manzama classifies and ranks industry blogs, news sites, and social media so customer organizations have relevant information for their business development and practice strategies.
“LAC’s partnership with Manzama creates real strategic advantages for both companies,” says Tyler Leshney, LAC Group’s EVP of corporate strategy and development. “Coupling the power of Manzama’s search and classification algorithms with LAC’s distributed labor pool creates a unique, curated offering that we think will redefine the competitive intelligence playing field.”

The New York Times Adds Subscription Options
The New York Times Co. announced new options in the New York Times digital subscription portfolio: NYT Now and Times Premier. These options are designed to offer more Times content to existing subscribers and to bring in new readers.
NYT Now provides supplemental content to the full subscription (for $8 every 4 weeks), such as a morning and an evening briefing and daily tip sheets. NYT Now also includes unlimited access to its iOS app, which showcases curated content edited by Clifford J. Levy, a senior editor at the Times.
Times Premier is the highest subscription level, at $45 every 4 weeks (or $10 more for existing home delivery subscribers). It features behind-the-scenes access and exclusive benefits in addition to all of the other digital access options, including NYT Now, TimesTalks (online videos of Times interviews), and TBooks (ebooks composed of Times articles).
“Our goal with this next phase of our paid products strategy is to satisfy the demand for Times journalism by giving new subscribers the ability to choose the amount of access they desire at a price point that suits them, and to enhance the value we offer our current loyal subscribers,” says Mark Thompson, president and CEO of The New York Times Co.

MDL Adds Journals Fulfillment via advance System
International book distributor MDL (Macmillan Distribution) will roll out a new subscription platform on Publishing Technology, PLC’s advance system, which has Product Manager; Contracts, Rights and Royalties; Order to Cash; and Information Commerce modules. MDL will implement Order to Cash as a way to expand into the journals fulfillment market, giving publishers subscription-based models for digital and print content and readers a seamless purchasing experience.
MDL clients will be able to use Order to Cash’s sales, marketing, and ecommerce capabilities to customize their products and experiment with new business models.
