Identity Security and Authentication Companies Join Forces
HID Global, a provider of secure identity solutions, acquired Lumidigm, Inc., an authentication solutions company. Lumidigm’s services will strengthen HID Global’s authentication portfolio in fields such as healthcare and finance, as well as in South America and Africa, among other markets. HID Global will offer Lumidigm the benefit of its size, channels, and product development strengths.
“As part of HID Global, Lumidigm can expand its current business while also extending proven technology beyond finger- and hand-based applications into iris, facial and other smart imaging systems,” says Robert M. Publishing Technology Enhances AIP Publishing's Scitation Platform
Publishing Technology, PLC partnered with AIP Publishing, part of the American Institute of Physics (AIP), to provide a new custom platform for AIP Publishing’s Scitation digital content database, which uses Publishing Technology’s hosting solution pub2web. Scitation now hosts almost 1 million articles from 47 journals, conference proceedings, blogs, standards, and the AIP’s flagship magazine Physics Today.
“pub2web not only provides the full spectrum of core e-journal functionality that today’s users expect, but delivers several new and exciting content-discovery tools built on our investment in semantic technology,” says John Haynes, AIP Publishing’s CEO.
pub2web enables concept boosting on the platform, which allows subject homepages to appear at the top of search results so Scitation users can easily access related content to their searches. Other new features include the addition of article-level metrics, semantic enrichment, author promotion features, as well as the ability to make comments, integrate with social networks, and search by author and affiliation.

ProQuest and OCLC Partner for Library Discovery
ProQuest added more than 320 million records from the ProQuest Central cross-disciplinary research tool to OCLC’s WorldCat Discovery Services, a combination of OCLC’s FirstSearch and WorldCat Local that debuts in March. Subscribers to both ProQuest Central and WorldCat Discovery Services can now access the full text of these records using the discovery service they choose, according to Skip Prichard, OCLC’s president and CEO.
The primary ProQuest Central database and 88 collections are available in WorldCat Discovery Services under the terms of a data exchange agreement ProQuest and OCLC signed in 2013. The agreement is designed to enhance library discovery for WorldCat Discovery Services users and ProQuest Central’s full-text journals, newspapers, magazines, dissertations, and other scholarly materials.
Thomson Reuters Eikon Monitors Tweets
The Thomson Reuters Eikon market analytics and trading software for financial professionals now includes news sentiment data and sentiment analysis of Twitter feeds.
Charting applications use the new data to identify trends and potential signals and to predict breaking news’ impact on market prices. Twitter and StockTwits feeds provide data in real time that Eikon weights and analyzes, creating a picture of the volume of positive or negative tweets about companies. The feeds offer a cross-section of all activity as well as of identified key influencers.
“With the addition of this sentiment data to Eikon we are combining our unique content and insight with innovative visualization and analytics tools. This is really just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we plan to do to turn qualitative, unstructured text into quantitative and actionable insight for our customers,” says Philip Brittan, Thomson Reuters’ CTO and global head of its financial and risk platform.

LexisNexis Boosts E-Discovery Management
By packaging LAW PreDiscovery and Concordance Evolution with the Vblock Systems portfolio from VCE, a converged cloud infrastructure systems company, LexisNexis Legal & Professional helps litigation service bureaus and large law firms deploy cloud-based systems for their large-scale e-discovery projects.
The new bundled solution will “enable our customers to diversify their e-discovery applications and accelerate the time to deployment of a cloud-based system,” says Matt Gillis, LexisNexis’ VP and managing director of litigation tools and professional services. Vblock Systems contributes the quick deployment capabilities, while LexisNexis’ products help customers manage aspects of e-discovery. LAW PreDiscovery is imaging and electronic processing software that filters and culls nonresponsive e-discovery before reviews, and Concordance Evolution can be installed or hosted to manage e-discovery for any size cases.
Customers pay for only the storage and software seats they use, according to Gillis.
EDP Open Promotes Gold OA
Publisher EDP Sciences introduced EDP Open, a new open access (OA) imprint for its scientific titles that offers OA journals, books, and conference proceedings all published exclusively online. There are now more than 70,000 OA scientific articles on the EDP Open platform.
EDP Sciences has been active in OA initiatives both in-house and with other publishers and societies. “Increasingly now we’re being asked to support the launch of new Gold Open Access journals, and EDP Open is our response to this,” says Jean-Marc Quilbé, EDP Sciences’ president. EDP Open launched two gold OA journals: Manufacturing Review, covering manufacturing engineering, technology, and applied sciences, and EPJ Applied Metamaterials, focusing on high-impact engineering applications for metamaterials.
Because EDP Sciences is owned by a group of learned societies, its publishing program’s mission is to “participate in the dissemination of important research work … as a goal of accelerating scientific progress and cross-fertilisation of ideas,” according to the EDP Open website.
