National Library to Digitize Norway’s Books

The National Library of Norway plans to digitize its entire collection. All content published in any medium in Norway is deposited with the National Library under the Norwegian Legal Deposit Act, so this digitization project represents all of the country’s works from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Users with Norwegian IP (internet protocol) addresses may access both copyrighted and noncopyrighted works. The entire digital collection is available for researchers working on-site at the National Library. The library estimates that it will spend 20–30 years digitizing all titles.

Bertelsmann Launches Social Media Hub

Bertelsmann introduced its social cloud website to the public. The site combines and displays content from the international media company’s social media channels in one place. Its social cloud focuses on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, but it also aggregates more than 2,000 Bertelsmann social media channels from around the world.

As new messages are posted, they appear on the social cloud in real time. The full range of international Bertelsmann companies and other subsidiaries are represented on the site, including TV/radio broadcasting and production companies and book/magazine publishers, which generate news in the form of video clips, author chats, tweets, and other content.

“It all started with the idea of creating more visibility for Bertelsmann’s digital activities, to highlight the broad spectrum of our offerings,” says Karin Schlautmann, executive VP of corporate communications. “The wealth of channels alone makes it clear how deeply our businesses are already anchored in the digital world, and how actively they make use of their opportunities.”

Bertelsmann plans to include language, media genre, and corporate division search options on the website. It also intends to add content from its YouTube channels as well as from other Bertelsmann social media networks.

UNESCO Broadens OA Policy

UNESCO introduced an open access (OA) repository that makes more than 300 online books, reports, and articles in about 12 languages freely available on UNESCO’s website. It operates under a new Creative Commons open licensing system for intergovernmental agencies. Each new UNESCO publication will be released with one of the new Creative Commons licenses and will be integrated into the OA repository.

In May 2013, UNESCO became the first United Nations agency to adopt an OA policy for its publications, making them available to millions of worldwide users. The adoption of OA was designed to increase the circulation of UNESCO’s publications and to raise awareness of its work.

Hundreds of other UNESCO publications that do not fall under the OA policy will also be made accessible online.

Thomson Reuters Enhances Research and Analytics Tools

The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters acquired German-based AVEDAS, which specializes in the development and implementation of current research information systems. Combining the two companies creates a single platform for streamlining research management workflow and providing analytics insights.

AVEDAS will join Thomson Reuters’ InCites research evaluation tool as part of Thomson Reuters’ Scholarly & Scientific Research unit. CONVERIS 5, AVEDAS’ flagship research management workflow solution, will become part of InCites and also integrate with Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science citation index data.

CONVERIS 5 complements InCites by supporting universities, research institutions, and funding agencies in data collection and management across the research life cycle. It includes modules for graduate student management, award management, research analytics, publications management, and data integration.

SirsiDynix eResource Central Manages 3M Cloud Library Titles

SirsiDynix integrated 3M Cloud Library with its eResource Central (eRC) management solution. More than 200,000 titles and hundreds of publishers from 3M are now available to eRC library customers in the U.S.

Libraries can update their local title metadata and sync thousands of e-resources to their catalog. Patrons can view the availability of 3M titles, check out titles from the catalog, and access checked-out content on their computers, mobile devices, or e-readers.

“Our partnership helps libraries reduce the friction their users experience when trying to download eResources, as well as the headache of managing eResources from various providers. eRC keeps all your eResource metadata in one place, and it updates your metadata to match the latest metadata from 3M Cloud Library and other providers with a single click,” says Bill Davison, SirsiDynix’s CEO.

Research Portal Aggregates IT Analysts’ Posts

Northern Light launched Listen… from Northern Light, a research portal that tracks information technology (IT) analysts’ posts on blogs, Twitter, and SlideShare. It offers a single point of access to 1.5 million posts by more than 2,000 analysts at 200-plus IT industry research firms.

IT analyst relations professionals, competitive intelligence professionals, product managers, and marketing communications managers can now track IT analysts’ opinions on companies, technologies, and industry developments. They no longer have to wait for analysts to release reports; they can research news as it happens from a broad range of sources.

The portal offers alerts on companies or topics for easy monitoring. It is integrated with Northern Light Business News, which searches 5,000 business-focused sources, white papers from 600 IT products and services companies, and a calendar of IT analyst events featuring more than 1,000 conferences, webinars, and podcasts.

“Because industry analysts are such influential thought and opinion leaders in the IT sector, it is critical that companies with a vested interest in IT markets, products and trends have a means to quickly discern analysts’ publicly-available views on a wide range of topics,” says C.
