Elsevierís SciVal Experts Leads Participation in National Research Network
Elsevier’s SciVal Experts, a directory of research expertise, is now participating in a growing national online research community called DIRECT2Experts that connects researchers across disciplines, institutions, and platforms. This online network allows users from academic institutions in the U.S. to find potential research collaborators, regardless of their local platforms and tools. DIRECT2Experts is a pilot project facilitated by the Research Networking Group of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA), a consortium led by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Research Resources.
Users at institutions participating in the DIRECT2Experts network have the opportunity to connect with researchers at other organizations in a growing national research community, which could expand globally in the future. Individual researchers can search and view researcher profiles in SciVal Experts in addition to a variety of other databases such as Harvard Catalyst Profiles, Stanford's Community Academic Profiles (CAP), VIVO at Cornell University and University of Florida, and Loki at the University of Iowa. Currently, 14 of the 29 institutions in the DIRECT2Experts network utilize SciVal Experts, including, Johns Hopkins University; Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; University of Michigan; and University of California Davis.
Textbook Rental Firm Chegg to Add Etextbooks
Chegg announced it is significantly expanding its digital offering, adding more etextbooks and digital content to its emerging social education platform. In addition to textbook rentals, Chegg has rapidly enhanced its services, offering a fully integrated experience with digital services, including homework help, course selection, and class notes (through its recently acquired company Notehall). Its goal is to offer millions of print books and etextbooks to students by the end of the year. Chegg has partnered with a number of publishers to offer etextbooks to its students, such as Cengage Learning, Elsevier, F.A. Davis, Macmillan, McFarland, McGraw-Hill, Oxford University Press, Rowman & Littlefield, Taylor and Francis, and Wiley.
Students who download the etextbooks from Chegg will have an enhanced reading experience, complete with a one-click subject navigation. They will also be able to do all the things students have done for years with physical books, like highlighting, but with the added benefit of taking notes and searching directly in the book. Additionally, the etextbook offering will include a “read while you wait” tool, where students can access their textbooks online while they wait for their hardcopy textbook to arrive.
Chegg and Vital Source Technologies, Inc., Ingram Content Group’s etextbook solution for publishers, academic institutions, and students, also announced that Ingram’s Vital Source, with 1.6 million registered users and a presence on 6,000 campuses in 180 countries, will power Chegg’s digital textbook option.

New Lexis for Microsoft Office Enhancements
LexisNexis announced significant new efficiency innovations to the core capabilities of its Lexis for Microsoft Office legal solution (such as PDF conversion, research browser, and a history map), as well as new functionality specifically designed for transactional lawyers.
Launched in 2010, Lexis for Microsoft Office offers legal professionals integrated access to information and services from LexisNexis, the open web, and firms’ own document management systems with the click of a button without leaving the Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft SharePoint desktop applications they use every day.
Lexis for Microsoft Office emphasizes increased efficiency by including new core features such as the following:
- PDF Conversion: LexisNexis teamed with a leading third party imaging solutions provider to enable users to convert PDF files into Word documents they can edit, allowing attorneys to more efficiently analyze existing work.
- Pinning: Using a “push pin” icon, attorneys are able to quickly save supporting research links for their own or colleague’s future reference.
- Research Browser: The feature creates a seamless bridge between Lexis for Microsoft Office and traditional online legal research, offering direct access to subscription content through lexis.com.
- History Map: A graphical representation of users’ research path that can be shared or retained for future reference.
New Lexis for Microsoft Office tools specifically launched for transactional attorneys include:
- Clauses & Contracts and Samples & Forms: Increased functionality for use in transactional drafting enables lawyers to quickly and easily find legal precedent within the context of their work product. Users can locate alternative language for a specific clause by searching SEC filings exhibits as well as leverage relevant sample documents directly from the Matthew Bender model forms collection.
