SPARC Introduces Open Access Journal Publishing Resource Index

SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) has released a free online Open Access Journal Publishing Resource Index with information and documents to support the launch and operation of an open-access journal. Materials in the index will help libraries, presses, and other academic units on campuses as they work together to make the work of their researchers more widely available.

This new resource is launched in conjunction with the SPARC Campus-based Publishing Resource Center, which delivers a guide to critical issues in campus-based publishing partnerships, case studies, a bibliography and resource list, an index of collaborative initiatives (operated in partnership with Columbia University Libraries), and access to the LIBPRESS online discussion forum (operated by the University of California). The Center is overseen by an editorial board representing library and university press staff who are actively engaged in creating and managing publishing partnerships.

The new index complements the existing resource center by pointing to relevant sections in existing open-access journal publishing guides and to sample journal proposals, policies, bylaws, and other documentation to help with planning, development, and collaboration issues. Topics covered include the following:

  • New Journal Planning
  • Journal Publishing Program Policies
  • Governance
  • Editorial
  • Marketing & Promotion
  • Technical Platforms
  • Sustainability Planning

Relevant sections of existing open-access publishing guides, including those by David Solomon, Carol Sutton, Kevin Stranack, Jan Velterop, Howard Goldstein, and Raym Crow, and others are indicated under each topic area.

LibreDigital Launches Self-Service Ebook Distribution Portal

LibreDigital, a solutions provider for digital books, newspapers, and magazines, announced that it has launched a new self-service distribution portal for small to medium sized publishers. The portal allows publishers with any kind of file to submit their ebooks for distribution on the Apple iBookstore and other marketplaces.

LibreDigital provides a wide range of digital publishing services to seven of the top 10 U.S. trade publishers. These services include distribution to ebook marketplaces, marketing and discovery tools, managed conversion services, and sales reporting and analytics through LibreDigital Business Intelligence. The new portal allows small to medium publishers to sign up online for distribution and conversion services online and achieve the quality levels that are necessary to gain distribution to more than 50 global marketplaces. Distribution services are provided on a revenue share and file conversion services can be charged to the publisher’s credit card based on the costs of converting from the original source.

LibreDigital is one of four approved aggregators for the Apple iBookstore in North America and the only one who can provide all of the services Apple tracks in its aggregator program. LibreDigital has also delivered a number of titles to Apple as enhanced ebook and fixed-format ebooks, helping to deliver the next generation ebook experience on the iPad. The new portal will open up these capabilities to small and medium sized publishers as well.

ProQuest Acquires BNIóNursing Index to Be Expanded

ProQuest has acquired BNI, a cornerstone database for nursing and midwifery in the U.K. BNI—shortened from British Nursing Index—has been compiled through a partnership of the libraries at Bournemouth University, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the Royal College of Nursing, and Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. ProQuest has built a long-term relationship with BNI through its distribution via Dialog, its business unit serving the professional market. Now, as the founding organizers seek to ensure the long-term health of the index, acquisition by ProQuest will ensure it continues to flourish.

Indexing more than 240 English-language titles—including essential international nursing and midwifery journals and selective content from medical, allied health, and management titles—BNI is renowned for reliability and precision. Its editorial process relies upon indexing by librarians with experience in providing information services to nurses and midwives. The database is updated monthly, making it one of the most current bibliographic resources of its kind.

ProQuest plans to invest in BNI, making it a full-text resource that expands well beyond the U.K. market. Content will continue to be accessed through the new ProQuest Dialog service and will ultimately be available on the all-new unified ProQuest platform.
