Serials Solutions Announces Hosted Proxy Service
Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest LLC, announced the availability of the proxy service, 360 Access Control. It is the industry’s first Software as a Service (SaaS) proxy solution designed to help librarians streamline the management of their e-resource collections, as well as improve patron access to those collections with a single sign-on.
Many librarians need the single sign-on offered by proxy services, which allow users to quickly access e-resources from all content providers without having to sign in repeatedly to access specific information. However, at the same time, librarians also want an easy-to-manage solution that is integrated with their data management workflow. Some librarians don’t want to implement and manage a proxy service. CAS Introduces SciFinder Enhancements
Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a provider of chemical information and a division of the American Chemical Society, announced new time-saving advancements and usability improvements to SciFinder, its premier research and discovery tool. The enhancements will accelerate researchers’ workflow and are especially valuable for synthetic chemists and other researchers who are engaged in lab preparations and synthesis planning.
In addition to presenting cleaner, more streamlined layouts, CAS chemists incorporated new features that enable researchers to do the following:
- View experimental procedures in context with a reaction. Access experimental procedures from six American Chemical Society journals and patents from USPTO, EPO, and WIPO patents—all released between 2005 and 2009. Examine, sort, and analyze experimental procedures for applicability to synthetic research needs.
- Search structures using SMILES and InChI strings. Enter SMILES (Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry Specification) or InChI (International Chemical Identifier) text strings into SciFinder’s drawing editor to conveniently generate structures.
- Rank reactions by relevance. Bring the most relevant reactions to the top of your answer set, improving retrieval quality and speed.

Answers.com announced its offering of an exclusive English language tool—access to the Random House Word Menu—helping people find the exact word at a moment's notice. De Gruyter to Offer Eproducts to End Users
Beginning in mid-January 2011, De Gruyter is extending its offering of ebooks, ejournals and databases to individual end customers. Until now, the publishing house has offered its electronic products exclusively to institutional customers.
The eproducts will be offered according to a differentiated pricing model. All ebooks will have the same price as the corresponding print edition. Due to their greater complexity, journal subscriptions and databases will be offered in a model consisting of five price segments. This model is based on a reduced price and a differentiated offer of products and service oriented on the interests of the target group. The customers will pay between 49 € and 299 € for an annual subscription, which provides twelve months’ access to the electronic content. After receipt of the order, the customers will gain access via a user name and password within 3 working days.
For sales of eproducts, retailers will be granted the same discount structure that institutions receive. Katrin Siems, vice president of marketing and sales at De Gruyter, stressed the importance of expanding cooperation with the retail trade for this strategic publishing decision: “The book trade has a key strength that is also of great value for us as publisher in the digital business—namely knowledge about the wishes and needs of the end customer.”

Appinions Sees the Web Through the Lens of Peopleís Opinions
A new software platform has launched, Appinions, for publishing, media companies, and researchers. Instead of reading countless pages of Web content delivered by conventional search tools, Appinions aggregates what people are saying, feeling, and thinking about a particular subject throughout the web. Appinions also released three apps, Sports Appinions, Celebrity Appinions, and Appinions W3 for WikiLeaks.
The technology underlying this innovation is a suite of easily configurable, opinion-based applications based on a sophisticated opinion extraction and aggregation platform launched by Appinions. The company currently targets two markets: publishers and media companies on the web, as well as brand managers, advertisers, marketers, and other research organizations.
Appinions is also introducing a number of downloadable online opinion apps that demonstrate how to harness the power of opinions and experience the next generation of Web content presentation.
Appinions is already being used by companies such as The Economist, real-time broadcast monitoring company Critical Mention, and educational publisher Cengage/Gale. There are more than half a dozen new customers launching applications in Q1 2011.

Thomson Reuters Launches Custom Fields in Thomson Innovation
The Intellectual Property (IP) Solutions business of Thomson Reuters announced the launch of its one-of-a-kind Custom Fields functionality in Thomson Innovation. IP professionals, innovators, researchers, attorneys, and patent portfolio managers can now create custom fields, allowing them to tag patent records with their own internal data, then search, analyze, and report on relationships between enterprise-specific and global patent information. The results and analyses can also be shared with others to enhance collaboration and streamline organizational workflow.
Custom Fields on Thomson Innovation enables professionals engaged in the IP lifecycle to add their own internal context to global patent information. For example, they can:
- Apply internal technology classifications to patent records to assign them to specific portfolios or business units
- Correlate product use or brand information to patent records to aid in valuation assessments
- Drive alert result workflows by attaching a process stage to patent records, indicating when it’s ready for the next participant in the process to take action
