AIIP Technology Award Goes to Attaain, Inc.

The Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP; www.aiip.org) announced that Attaain, Inc. (www.attaain.com) has been honored as the recipient of the 10th annual AIIP Technology Award, presented on Oct. 27, 2009, at the Internet Librarian conference in Monterey, Calif. Attaain was recognized for AttaainCI, its competitive intelligence and market intelligence tool, which provides information through a full-featured, well-thought-out, and easy-to-use web-based system, according to the association's panel of judges. Every year, the AIIP Technology Award is presented to a company whose product, in the opinion of the panel, best assists independent information professionals with their day-to-day operations in locating, analyzing, organizing, and delivering information.

AttaainCI uniquely aggregates web data by pulling together results from dozens of sources and building comprehensive reports on-the-fly. The product provides real-time business intelligence using a variety of data sources, including company websites, user-supplied information, news, social media mentions, reports, white papers, documents, and patents.

"AIIP believes that Attaain Inc.'s product not only enables information professionals to provide competitive intelligence to their clients, but also can help them to track companies to target for marketing," says AIIP president Marcy Phelps.

AttaainCI was nominated for the award by AIIP member Ellen Naylor, owner of Business Intelligence Source (www.thecisource.com). Naylor describes AttaainCI as "a fabulous, cost-effective monitoring and searching tool, which is constantly being enhanced."

In addition to the award to Attaain, Inc., the AIIP awards committee gave honorable mention to FreePatentsOnline.com (www.freepatentsonline.com), which the committee feels offers fast and easy-to-use, yet powerful, search capabilities; the site offers free access to published patents and patent applications.

PBworks Announces Real-Time and Voice Collaboration

PBworks (http://pbworks.com), a provider of hosted collaboration solutions for business and education, announced its upcoming Real-Time Collaboration Update, including true Voice Collaboration. Geographically distributed teams will be able to work together on writing content, creating meeting notes in real time, working together during impromptu conference calls, and enjoying other interactive features that previously required a face-to-face meeting.

PBworks is making real-time collaboration a natural extension of its existing tools. When a user needs to connect with one or more colleagues to gather feedback, he or she simply calls them to the relevant wiki page using the built-in instant messaging; available users can see edits being made in real-time and chat about them. When a telephone conversation is necessary, available users can be added to an ad hoc conference call with a single click that initiates an outbound call to the user's regular telephone.

IM Collaboration allows users to see who else in their organization is actively using PBworks at that moment; it enables them to send those people instant messages from within the product. In addition, users can summon others to the workspace page they're working on if they'd like input using the "send a link" function built into the IM system.

Live Editing will eliminate the need to use other web conferencing services to share a PBworks editing session. Whenever a user is editing a workspace page, other users viewing that page see the edits appear in real-time. Live Notifications alerts users to activity within their organization in real time rather than requiring them to await an email notification.

IM Collaboration, Live Notifications, and Live Editing will be available to Project and Legal Edition customers on Nov. 17. There is no charge for this upgrade. Voice Collaboration will be available in early 2010. PBworks is a trademark of PBwiki, Inc.

ARL, ALA Issue Statement Supporting PATRIOT Amendments Act of 2009

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL; www.arl.org) and the American Library Association (ALA; www.ala.org) have issued a statement saying they strongly support the USA PATRIOT Amendments Act of 2009 (www.arl.org/bm~doc/house-jud-1pgrpsafinal.pdf). Several provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act are set to expire on Dec. 31, 2009, unless Congress acts to reauthorize them.

On Oct. 20, 2009, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and Representatives Jerrold R. Nadler (D-NY) and Bobby Scott (D-VA) introduced the USA PATRIOT Amendments Act of 2009 (H.R.3845). The associations believe that this bill contains necessary and important reforms to the powers created by the USA PATRIOT Act, especially to Section 215, often called the "library provision," and to national security letters (NSLs).

The USA PATRIOT Amendments Act of 2009 includes several key reforms that restore important civil liberties without diminishing the government's ability to conduct legitimate national security investigations. Chief among these reforms are the following:

  • Prohibition of use of Section 215 orders to obtain personally identifiable information about patrons from libraries or booksellers
  • Meaningful judicial review of Section 215 orders, NSLs, and the gag orders that prevent recipients from talking about these orders
  • Rational limits on gag orders including limits on their duration once challenged
  • Rational limits on the scope of NSLs so that they cannot be used unreasonably to gather information on innocent Americans
  • Minimization procedures to insure that information obtained using these powers is destroyed once it is no longer relevant to an ongoing investigation
  • Yearly audits of the use of these powers and a new "sunset" that will give Congress an opportunity to consider further reform based on those audits.
