Wolters Kluwer Health to Acquire UpToDate
Wolters Kluwer Health (www.wkhealth.com), a provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health, pharmacy, and the pharmaceutical industry, announced it intends to acquire UpToDate (www.uptodate.com), an evidence-based electronic clinical information resource. This acquisition is designed to strengthen Wolters Kluwer Health’s portfolio in the growing point of care and electronic medical record markets by expanding its product and services offerings. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
UpToDate, which is accessible through the web, a desktop, and PDA, is an electronic information resource designed to provide clinicians with practical and reliable answers to clinical questions at the point of care. All of UpToDate’s content is original material. UpToDate collaborates with some 3,800 physician experts, who use their clinical experience and review of the latest research to create recommendations on how to diagnose and treat thousands of conditions in 13 medical specialties. Nearly 320,000 clinicians in 130 countries, thousands of patients, and the majority of academic medical centers in the U.S. look to UpToDate for clinical guidance, practice guidelines, peer-reviewed articles, photographs, and X-ray illustrations.
UpToDate is expected to generate annualized projected revenue of $80 million in 2008 and has demonstrated consistent double-digit organic revenue growth over the last 4 years. It has approximately 250 employees and is headquartered in Waltham, Mass., with international sales offices in the Netherlands and Japan. The transaction is expected to be completed in 4Q of 2008 pending regulatory approval and satisfaction of closing conditions.

YouSendIt Expands Adobe Acrobat Delivery Options
YouSendIt, Inc. announced it has expanded its direct file delivery platform with a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat. The YouSendIt plug-in for Acrobat allows users to send files up to 2GB directly from the application, avoiding the need for FTP transfers or burning large files to a CD to ship overnight. Files are not subject to email size limitations or firewall obstructions, and they can also be tracked with YouSendIt’s delivery options so the sender knows exactly when the files have been received.
Additionally, the YouSendIt plug-in for Acrobat includes the protection of resumable upload. Should an internet connection be momentarily lost during file upload, activity will resume automatically once the connection has been restored. It also allows users to configure the amount of time a file is available for download or the number of times it is downloaded.
The Acrobat plug-in can be used with Acrobat Standard and Professional versions 8 and 9 for Microsoft Windows and with Acrobat Professional versions 8 and 9 for Mac. The plug-in, which can be conveniently downloaded directly from the YouSendIt website, is the latest product created to speed file transfers and reduce the cycle times for YouSendIt business users.

Credo Reference Launches Improved Interface
Credo Reference, the online reference library, has completely updated and enhanced its interface. The new and improved platform now features key elements developed as a result of direct feedback and testing with librarians worldwide. Credo’s interface has been optimized to address different types of reference questions.
Credo Reference and its continually expanding online collection provide cross-searchable access to more than 3 million entries from 300-plus key titles and more than 60 publishers. Now, with the newly revamped interface, Credo Reference users will be able to take advantage of features such as the following:
- Faceted browsing—refine searches in many different ways, such as by subject, type of content, person, or entries with images or audio
- Improved Concept Map—Credo’s visualization tool
- Direct linking to the resources of a library’s choice—view search results in another library resource with one click through Credo’s new Related Resources feature (library configurable)
- Multilingual interface—currently available in English, Chinese, French, Polish, Spanish, and Urdu (more languages to follow)
- Citation management—export saved results to the user’s tool of choice, such as RefWorks or EndNote
- Bookmarking in a favorite, social networking site, such as Del.icio.us or Facebook
- Explore titles by heading, person, place, image, audio, or video—hover over an entry in the index for a preview

(www.matthewsbooks.com) to distribute ebooks and other authoritative content in medicine and allied health to libraries and other organizations throughout the world.
