FictionDB Offers Free Access to Book Database
FictionDB (www.fictiondb.com) has relaunched its reference website with new access to its comprehensive book database for fiction readers. Previously a subscription-only service, FictionDB now offers free access to more than 50,000 author book lists and 200,000 unique titles. In addition FictionDB provides series lists, synopses, and pseudonyms—all in a simple, easy-to-use format.
"FictionDB is unique in that the site is built top-down, rather than bottom-up like so many of the popular social networking book sites," states owner Kelly Wong. "To create the best reference site, you need both organization from the top and community knowledge from the bottom." Visitors provide additional information through tags and direct updates, but they are not the primary data source.
Readers have many options on the web for book-related information: blogs, social networking sites, and sites that sell or swap books. However, readers want a site that instantly provides them with the ability to search for an author, find the complete book list, discover books in a series, and read synopses or reviews.
FictionDB offers quick access to concise, usable information. Look up author Nora Roberts at most large book websites and upward of 500 different books will be displayed when there are currently only 164 unique works. FictionDB starts with the author and his or her bibliography. Synopses, genre information, series and sequels, publishing history, pseudonyms, and cover art are then added by a diligent staff. Many of the books in the database display information not available anywhere else on the web.
Ingram Digital to Distribute Encyclopaedia Britannica Ebook Reference Set
Ingram Digital Group (www.ingramdigital.com), the Ingram Content company focused on solutions for digital content management, hosting, distribution, and promotion, announced an agreement with Encyclopaedia Britannica (www.britannica.com) to distribute the publisher’s ebook reference set worldwide.
Encyclopaedia Britannica will offer 27 titles totaling 92 volumes, spanning preschool through higher education content, on Ingram Digital’s econtent aggregation platform, MyiLibrary. Ingram Digital will distribute Encyclopaedia Britannica’s ebook reference set to library consortia. Rights have also been granted so that individual institutions will be able to purchase the collection from MyiLibrary and its distributors.
MyiLibrary offers libraries the benefits of simultaneous, multi-user access to digital content with no check-in or check-out requirements, no plug-ins or readers to download. Ingram Digital provides libraries with the option of purchasing titles through either a 12-month subscription or a perpetual model.

EBSCO and ATLA to Create Digital Archives for Purchase
EBSCO Publishing (www.ebscohost.com) has partnered with American Theological Library Association (ATLA; www.atla.com) to provide new collections of historical monographs and serials in digital format. ATLA Historical Monographs Collection: 19th Century, ATLA Historical Monographs Collection: Early 20th Century, and ATLA Historical Serials Collection will consist of digital versions of rare and historical primary sources.
EBSCO will enable libraries to purchase ownership of each collection rather than provide leased access, which is required with subscription-based databases. Digital archive products are typically sold as "static" collections for a one-time purchase price with an annual maintenance fee. (This is a first for EBSCO Publishing, which has always provided databases on a subscription basis.)
The monograph collections will contain more than 29,000 monographs covering religion and theology. The majority of the monographs date from 1850 through 1923 with the earliest monograph from 1322. The monograph collections are estimated to include 7.5 million pages of content. The historical serials collection will contain more than 1,200 serials from the early 19th century to the early 20th century and are estimated to include 5.4 million pages of content. With each collection, researchers can view all of the typography, graphics, and drawings as they were originally presented.
EBSCO will provide access via its EBSCOhost interface. In addition to the new digital content, EBSCO is an aggregator of ATLA’s complete collection of subscription-based databases, including the ATLA Religion Database, ATLA Serials (ATLAS), Catholic Periodical and Literature Index (produced from a partnership with the Catholic Library Association), New Testament Abstracts (produced from a partnership with Boston College), and Old Testament Abstracts (produced from a partnership with the Catholic Biblical Association).

SparkIP Rolls Out New Search Tools and Subscription Packages
SparkIP, an online intellectual property (IP) research and marketplace platform, released a new version of its product with advanced features and announced the availability of subscription packages targeted to individual and enterprise users. With this release, SparkIP, which launched in fall 2007, will officially move out of beta and become widely available to the scientific and business communities.
New features include international patent coverage, bookmarks, exports, alerts, custom portfolios, and advanced views. Targeted to corporations, law firms, universities, government labs, research institutions and individual innovators, SparkIP uses multiple techniques to associate the world’s innovation into a visual landscape consisting of more than 40,000 SparkClusters. SparkIP allows IP researchers to enhance their previous text-only searches to more robust and sophisticated contextual analysis. Through its patent-pending SparkClusters, users can mine a broader set of relevant data to find nonobvious results that are often missed through text-only query tools. SparkCluster maps also allow users to quickly landscape an area of innovation to understand the key companies, innovators, and patented inventions that are driving change. Already, SparkIP claims to be the world’s largest actively managed IP marketplace, with more than 7,500 available technologies from 30 leading research institutions. By combining the IP marketplace with powerful research tools, SparkIP is able to present relevant opportunities to buyers/licensees in context. Also, with the new alerting feature, subscribers can get a first look at interesting opportunities as soon as they are available.
In response to user needs, SparkIP created two new packages/pricing programs to allow customers the appropriate level of access and support for business goals and needs. The Individual SILVER subscription is designed for single users and is offered on a month-to-month basis. The Enterprise GOLD subscription is for organizations with multiple users seeking to leverage the complete set of SparkIP advanced features. CrossCheck Plagiarism Screening Service Launches
CrossRef (www.crossref.org) has announced the official launch of CrossCheck, a new initiative to aid publishers in verifying the originality of scholarly content. Following on the success of CrossRef’s recent pilot of CrossCheck, this service is now open to all CrossRef member publishers.
CrossRef partnered with iParadigms, LLC (www.iparadigms.com) in creating CrossCheck powered by iThenticate (https://crosscheck.ithenticate.com). CrossRef members who choose to participate can verify the originality of works submitted for publication using the iParadigms iThenticate service to check against a vast database of proprietary as well as open web content.
The CrossCheck database is already slated to cover more than 20 million journal articles from the following participating publishers: Association for Computing Machinery, American Society of Neuroradiology, BMJ Publishing Group, Elsevier, IEEE, International Union of Crystallography, Nature Publishing Group, Oxford University Press, Sage, Informa U.K. (Taylor & Francis), and Wiley Blackwell. With the launch, both publisher participation and the CrossCheck database should grow quickly.
Until now, there was no automated way to check submissions against previous publications because the published literature had not been indexed and "text fingerprinted" for this purpose. According to Ed Pentz, CrossRef’s executive director, "CrossCheck is only as strong as the collective whole. It was important that the pilot publishers joined on but now we need the rest of the CrossRef members to join this initiative. … We anticipate expanding the database of content very rapidly."
Clarabridge Releases Content Mining Platform 3.0
Clarabridge (www.clarabridge.com) announced the general availability of Release 3.0 of its Content Mining Platform (CMP). With this release, Clarabridge has incorporated new customer-driven capabilities, including an intuitive guided discovery interface for analysts and researchers, enterprise class deployment capabilities, and application and packaging enhancements.
In development for the past year, CMP 3.0 is designed to provide an enterprise class platform for use by customer-oriented analysts across marketing, product, and customer care organizations. Business analysts now gain a drag-and-drop web interface, Clarabridge Navigator, which makes it easy for non-IT users to harvest customer feedback from surveys, user forums, online product reviews, and other consumer-oriented sources. This interface empowers a broad range of users, business analysts, and market researchers to rapidly explore, organize, and distill insights from text-based customer experiences, product suggestions, and market feedback.
Clarabridge’s sentiment extraction engine now provides clients with finer domain-specific tuning, allowing for more accurate and in-depth analysis of customer sentiment on a particular subject. To support a robust, scalable software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, CMP 3.0 also gives analysts from different departments the ability to collaborate on various customer experience management initiatives. It also improves the core technology that supports multiterabyte data volumes, foreign language requirements, the processing of diverse data types, and the secure sharing of data with other applications.
