Semio Adds New XML Capabilities
Semio Corp. (http://www.semio.com), a provider of content categorization solutions for business portals, has announced that it has enhanced its core engine, Semio Tagger, to automatically generate XML metadata. With this capability, Semio's core technology can be quickly and easily applied in a variety of new ways, such as tracking trends and patterns for targeted advertising, summarizing content for wireless delivery, or developing communities of interest.
Semio Tagger provides high-performance, highly scalable processing for large amounts of online content from disparate data sources. It organizes this content in topic hierarchies based on relevant phrases that are automatically identified by Semio Tagger. This gives companies the ability to fine-tune categorization rules for unique business needs or individual user requirements.
"Working with online publishers like IDG, it became clear that there were many applications for Semio's core technology that go beyond simple navigation and browsing," said Jim Nisbet, Semio's vice president for research and development. "It was also clear that XML was the right vehicle to deliver structured content to these applications and to open our technology for broader use."
Semio Tagger can be used in conjunction with Semio's viewer applications, Semio Taxonomy and Semio Map, or it can be embedded in a business portal or a customized application. The product supports a wide range of content sources, including most commercial file formats, PDF, HTML/XML sources, Lotus Notes databases, Documentum document vaults, and unstructured text in relational databases. It supports English-, French-, Spanish-, and Italian-language sources, with more languages available shortly.
Fatbrain.com Launches Resource Center for IEEE
Fatbrain.com (http://www.fatbrain.com), an online bookstore and provider of information management solutions, has teamed up with The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) to provide a customized online information resource center designed for the more than 350,000 scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, and technology executives worldwide who are members of IEEE.
IEEE's online resource center can be accessed through the association's Web site (http://www.ieee.org/ieeefatbrain). The new resource center gives IEEE members access and special discounts to Fatbrain.com's inventory of books, training courses, and documentation products. In addition, the information store features a variety of conference proceedings, videos, self-study courses, industry standards, and other related merchandise catered specifically to member areas of expertise.
Fatbrain.com also offers custom online bookstores for company intranets, a print-on-demand program, and a digital publishing initiative. "The IEEE information resource center illustrates Fatbrain.com's ability to provide flexible, custom Web-based resources designed to meet the demanding standards of industry-leading organizations and corporations," said Dennis Capovilla, Fatbrain.com's president and CEO.
SciQuest.com Partners with ChemWeb.com
SciQuest.com (http://www.sciquest.com), a marketplace for scientific products and equipment, services, software, and information, has announced a strategic content partnership with ChemWeb, Inc., producer of ChemWeb.com (http://www.chemweb.com), an online community of chemistry researchers. The alliance provides improved access to ChemWeb.com's industry-specific information from the SciQuest.com Marketplace and allows users of ChemWeb to quickly and easily navigate SciQuest.com's suite of services.
Under the agreement, an expansion of an earlier co-marketing relationship, users of the SciQuest.com Marketplace will be able to more easily access articles and other value-added content from the ChemWeb.com site. In addition, ChemWeb.com members gain easy access to SciQuest.com's product and equipment inventory.
ChemWeb.com delivers information resources for chemical research and communication via the Web to over 200,000 members worldwide. According to the company, it's the first commercial Web service to combine electronic publishing, databases, journals, and scientific forums, along with informatics technologies for structure-based searching, high-speed text retrieval, and manipulation of "live" molecular structures. ChemWeb, Inc., based in London, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Elsevier Science, Ltd., which is part of the Reed Elsevier Group.
