Inmagic Announces Release of Inmagic.NET
Inmagic, Inc. (http://www.inmagic.com), a developer of knowledge management and special library software, has announced the release of Inmagic.NET, a new extension of DB/TextWorks, its core text-based information management product, and soon to be an extension of its second major product, BiblioTech PRO. Inmagic.NET allows information professionals to speed acquisitions work flow by purchasing, cataloging, indexing, and disseminating information throughout an organization via a seamless, Net-connected environment.
Inmagic.NET's current version allows information professionals to order actual books directly from Baker & Taylor, barnesandnoble.com, Fatbrain.com, and a growing list of other information vendors. Purchases are enabled through a Web link to these vendors placed directly in DB/TextWorks. Those who order through Baker & Taylor have the ability to request that the company download core bibliographic data to Inmagic's servers, where it can be imported directly into the customer's DB/TextWorks database. From there, bibliographic data can be edited by the customer to meet individual preferences and needs.
Inmagic.NET uses XML technology to allow electronic tagging of information, much like a Web page is tagged. Tagged information, such as core bibliographic records or financial data related to a transaction, can be downloaded in the format preferred by the customer, enabling the speedy updating of DB/TextWorks files.
Future plans include increasing the number of Inmagic.NET information vendors in North America and globally, as well as aggressively expanding beyond books to include online acquisition of such e-information resources as serials, journals, news feeds, and other types of e-publications. Infotrieve Debuts Virtual Library Platform
Infotrieve (http://www.infotrieve.com) has announced the debut of its Virtual Library platform, a system of locating, selecting, and purchasing published literature in a customized and co-branded environment. Operating as a free-to-search, pay-per-article system, the Virtual Library platform is designed to deliver significant time and cost benefits to customers. This platform will showcase two of Infotrieve's latest offerings, the free search tool Article Finder and the e-journal collection, a roster of over 500 electronic publications with pay-per-article selection. Both are due for full release in the first quarter of next year.
The Virtual Library platform is aimed at the corporate and academic library markets. According to a company representative, implementation is free to libraries and takes from 2 hours to 2 days for Infotrieve's IT department to set up. The company already claims over 50 implementations, including the libraries of California State University.
Known as "The Article Store," Infotrieve has assembled a library of article and journal content, a collection that's constantly expanding through the company's ongoing partnerships and alliances with publishers and content producers. With the Virtual Library, Infotrieve proactively makes this information a customizable asset for researchers and information professionals, while retaining intellectual property protection for publishers.
The Virtual Library offers a free, user account-management system; a personalization engine to customize visuals and search parameters; a free Table of Contents Alert Service to select articles from customer-preferred journals; the upcoming Article Finder, a bibliographic database containing over 22 million citations and over 10 million abstracts from more than 35,000 scholarly journals; and a fast-growing e-journal collection on a pay-per-article basis that's expected to reach several thousand journals next year.
PurpleYogi, The Wall Street Journal Online Offer Web Assistant
PurpleYogi, Inc. (http://www.purpleyogi.com), a creator of distributed knowledge management software called Discovery Systems, and The Wall Street Journal Online (WSJ.com) have announced that they will offer WSJ Yogi, a co-branded Web assistant, to the newspaper's subscribers. The WSJ Yogi is an intelligent, personalized, online, content-discovery service that automatically links users of the WSJ.com with the Web content most relevant to them.
According to the company, Discovery Systems classifies documents into a rich taxonomy of concepts by comparing the statistical patterns embedded within documents against concept models created using proprietary advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and information theory.
The WSJ Yogi, which will be offered as a free download from http://www.wsj.com, is a desktop application for Internet browsing that effortlessly a user's interests and suggests related content instantaneously as the user browses the Web. The WSJ Yogi learns the interests of each online subscriber based on what they read online, then actively connects him or her with the most recent and relevant news from WSJ.com and other leading content providers.
The Yogi works continuously, displaying related and recommended content as headlines within a window on the user's desktop. It also accompanies users as they surf the Web, relieving WSJ.com subscribers from the task of searching for content of interest to them. The WSJ Yogi can be downloaded at
