Yahoo! Launches Free Education Resource

Yahoo! has announced the launch of Yahoo! Education (http://education.yahoo.com), a free resource that enables educators at the college, high school, and middle school levels to easily create a virtual classroom environment and communications center for their students. Through this new service, professors and teachers can extend the traditional classroom onto the Internet by posting class rosters, calendars, and syllabi, and by connecting with students through private classroom message boards and e-mail.

Students can access their virtual classroom materials from wherever they have an Internet-connected computer, whether at school, home, the library, or a friend's house. Once in their virtual classroom, students will have access to posted information, e-mail, message boards, links to reading materials, and key online bookmarks. For example, students using their private message board to post questions from a school computer during the day can pick up their teacher's reply through their home computer that evening. The student simply logs onto his or her protected classroom environment that resides online rather than on a hard drive.

Yahoo! also announced new agreements with three leading providers of education materials—Bartleby.com, Britannica.com, and Houghton Mifflin Co.—all of which bring together their resources to create the Yahoo! Education reference area. The Reference area comes fully equipped with access to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, fourth edition; The Britannica Concise; Roget's II: The New Thesaurus, third edition; Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body; The Oxford Shakespeare; Bartlett's Familiar Quotations; and the World Factbook. Consumers also have access to a 14-day free trial to the complete Encyclopaedia Britannica.

New York Times Digital, FT.com Announce Reciprocal Agreement

New York Times Digital (http://www.nytdigital.com), the Internet division of The New York Times Co. (http://www.nytco.com), and FT.com, the online partner of the Financial Times, have announced a reciprocal content-distribution agreement. Under the agreement, FT.com will be able to publish up to 10 full-text articles from the business, technology, and international sections of NYTimes.com each business day, while NYTimes.com will be able to publish up to 10 full-text articles from the business, technology, and international sections of FT.com each business day. All of the articles will retain the branding of the originating Web site. This arrangement is scheduled to go live on both sites this month.

Stephen Hill, CEO of the Financial Times Group, said, "This partnership between two of the world's most respected news organizations will benefit audiences seeking editorial insight and perspective from authoritative and trusted online brands."

According to the announcement, both NYTimes.com and FT.com are experiencing steady traffic growth this year. NYTimes.com is the number-one newspaper site and number-three news and information site on the Web, attracting nearly 6 million unique visitors per month. FT.com also attracts a highly loyal user base of 2 million unique monthly users, 70 percent of whom visit at least once a week.

Factiva Announces Addition of Knight Ridder Digital Online Content

Factiva (http://www.factiva.com) and Knight Ridder Digital (http://www.knightridderdigital.com) have announced an agreement allowing Factiva to include online content from 29 Knight Ridder newspapers as part of its global news and business information offering. Through Knight Ridder Digital, full-text daily publications from top media markets around the country, as well as from state capitals and other important regional centers, will now be available on the day of publication to Factiva customers through Dow Jones Interactive and all other Factiva products.

A partial list of publications included in this agreement is as follows: San Jose Mercury News (BayArea.com), Detroit Free Press (Freep.com), The Miami Herald (Miami.com), Fort Worth Star Telegram (DFW.com), The Charlotte Observer (Charlotte.com), The Kansas City Star (KansasCity.com), St. Paul Pioneer Press (TwinCities.com), Philadelphia Daily News (Philly.com), Akron Beacon Journal (Ohio.com), Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (RealColumbus.com), Contra Costa Times (BayArea.com), Duluth News-Tribune (MississippiCoast.com), and The (Biloxi) Sun Herald. These additional publications join an existing content set of nearly 8,000 sources, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Le Monde, Financial Times, and the South China Morning Post.

The new agreement is part of Knight Ridder Digital's Content Services initiative. That initiative grows out of online publishers' needs to create multiple streams of revenue. "We believe we can balance the needs of a destination site and destination network strategy with that of our content syndication strategy, growing both," said Ken Doctor, vice president of content services at Knight Ridder Digital.
