Reed Elsevier’s Harcourt Unit to Acquire Classroom Connect
Harcourt, Inc. (http://www.harcourt.com), the U.S.-based K-12 education business recently acquired by Reed Elsevier, has announced that it will acquire Classroom Connect, Inc. (http://www.classroom.com), a U.S. market leader in the provision of online teacher training and development, and original, standards-based online curriculum. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
According to the announcement, online professional development for teachers, as provided by Classroom Connect, is a natural extension of Harcourt's e-learning services and fits closely within Harcourt's overall e-learning strategy. Classroom Connect will operate as a business unit within the Harcourt Education group and will be a focal point for the development of the group's technology-enabled learning activities.
Tony Lucki, CEO of Harcourt Education, said: "Classroom Connect brings our group the strength of a leadership position in the discipline of technology-enabled professional development for teachers, an area that we believe will be increasingly important in the future of the education sector."
Judy Hamilton, president and CEO of Classroom Connect, said: "The link with Harcourt ensures that we will remain in the vanguard of e-learning developments and will enable us to expand our services for K-12 educators and their students so that they can obtain real benefit from their use of the Internet."
Classroom Connect is headquartered in Brisbane, California, with offices in El Segundo, California; Minneapolis; and Abilene, Texas. Classroom Connect has more than 170 employees. Its primary brands include Connected University (online professional development), Classroom Today (online classroom curriculum), The Quest Channel (online adventure learning expeditions), Connected Conferences (live, nationwide events), Connected Workshops (live seminars), and Classroom Connect Newsletter (monthly Internet education journal).

Commonwealth Business Media to Buy Marquis Who’s Who and National Register Titles from Reed Elsevier
Commonwealth Business Media, Inc. (http://cbizmedia.com) announced that it has signed a definitive purchase agreement with Reed Elsevier, Inc. (http://www.reed-elsevier.com) to buy the Marquis Who's Who line (http://www.marquiswhoswho.com) of business as well as selected titles of the National Register Publishing brand (http://www.nationalregisterpub.com), including The Official Catholic Directory and The Official Museum Directory. The acquisition is expected to close early next month. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. This follows closely the sale of the R.R. Bowker properties by Reed Elsevier to CSA and Information Today, Inc. (see the August 24 NewsBreak at http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/nbreader.asp?ArticleID=17524).
Commonwealth Business Media was formed last October in a management-led buyout of Primedia Information, Inc. It is a provider of information to the international trade and transportation market, as well as the performing arts and commercial credit industries. On August 20, the company also announced that it had purchased the assets of The Journal of Commerce Group from The Economist.
Alan Glass, Commonwealth's chairman, president, and CEO, said: "This is a great acquisition for Commonwealth as it further diversifies our product line into more subscription-based businesses as well as giving us a foothold in the reference market. The Marquis Who's Who brand is the most highly respected source of biographical data worldwide."

Factiva to Integrate Content with Epicentric Business Portal Solutions
Factiva has announced an agreement through the Factiva Partner Network (http://www.factiva.com/network) to integrate Factiva's global news and business information within Epicentric Foundation Server 3.5, Epicentric, Inc.'s business portal platform. With minimal development, Epicentric's enterprise customers can easily integrate Factiva's global content collection into their portal interface using Factiva Search Module and Factiva Track Module.
Business users of Epicentric's platform will be able to research and track Factiva content from more than 6,000 world-class news and business information sources—including content in 12 languages from 118 countries—without leaving the portal interface, saving time and increasing organizational productivity.
"This agreement enables Epicentric customers to develop and centrally manage their Web initiatives by integrating relevant news and business information sources available through Factiva into their business process," said Clare Hart, president and CEO of Factiva. "As portal platforms continue to develop, companies will use them to not only empower their employees with information, but redefine the way they interact with their customers and suppliers."
Factiva Search Module and Factiva Track Module—available with English, French, and German user interfaces—are part of the Factiva Integration suite of tools that are designed to integrate Factiva's global content into intranets, portals, and CRM systems. Through the Factiva Partner Network, Factiva teams with software developers to provide easy integration into common enterprise applications.
