Thomson Financial Introduces First Call Analyst

Thomson Financial ( has unveiled First Call Analyst, a powerful Web-based investment research and analytical tool for institutional investors. First Call Analyst combines the clients' own data with real-time institutional content from Thomson Financial and relevant third parties. First Call Analyst also offers sophisticated management tools, filters, advanced charting, and portfolio analytics, with full export capability to Microsoft Excel. First Call Analyst has been released to a group of institutional investors, with a global launch planned next month.

First Call Analyst is the first component of Thomson Dashboard, a suite of customizable and interoperable investment-oriented programs brought together on a single interface. Thomson Dashboard components represent each phase of the investment process from decision support, stock selection, and research and analysis, to trade execution and settlement. Combined, the components form a fully integrated work-flow solution. Individual components will also be available separately.

ProQuest Acquires SoftLine Information

ProQuest Information and Learning ( has announced that it has acquired SoftLine Information (, the Stamford, Connecticut-based producer of online databases for libraries and educational institutions. SoftLine's full-text databases will become available from ProQuest immediately.

SoftLine offers more than 500 newspapers and magazines from ethnic, minority, native, gender, alternative, and independent press. Prior to SoftLine's introduction of its databases, most titles were not available in electronic formats. The titles are organized into five specialized databases covering ethnic, cultural, and demographic diversity, including Ethnic NewsWatch, Ethnic NewsWatch History, Alt-Press Watch, Gender Watch, and Diversity Your World. The databases are available by subscription and are delivered to library users via the Web. Founded in 1991, SoftLine's mission has been to bring information to a public forum that reflects diversity within the American mainstream.

"SoftLine products are highly valued by libraries and users for their quality, unique content, and ability to bring alternative viewpoints to the learning experience," said Joe Reynolds, president and CEO of ProQuest Information and Learning. EBSCO Publishing Acquires Alt-HealthWatch

Alt-HealthWatch, originally created by SoftLine Information, Inc., and since sold to, Inc., has been purchased by EBSCO Publishing ( With this recent acquisition, EBSCO has now added 10 full-text medical databases this year to its list of available databases, and further demonstrates its commitment to serving medical and hospital libraries around the world. Other databases made available this year include three editions of the Biomedical Reference Collection (Comprehensive, Expanded, and Basic editions), three editions of the Nursing & Allied Health Collection (Comprehensive, Expanded, and Basic editions), Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, Sociological Collection, and PsycARTICLES. Alt-HealthWatch has been available on EBSCO for over a year.

According to the announcement, EBSCO provides a powerful, intuitive interface for MEDLINE, CINAHL, and other important bibliographic collections. Furthermore, EBSCOhost facilitates the location of full text by providing seamless links from citations in these bibliographic databases to the corresponding full text in other EBSCOhost databases, e-journals, and more. The recent acquisition of Alt-HealthWatch is a reinforcement of EBSCO's commitment to offering the most inclusive and diverse collection of medical databases.

Alt-HealthWatch focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic, and integrated approaches to healthcare and wellness. It offers libraries full-text articles from more than 170 international peer-reviewed and professional journals, magazines, reports, proceedings, association and consumer newsletters (most from 1990 to the present), plus hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research, and book excerpts. In addition to standard bibliographic citations, the database indexes each article by more than 225 subject categories, 16 article types, and 11 publication types.
