EBSCOhost Now Links to OCLC’s WorldCat
EBSCO has announced an agreement with OCLC through which affiliated OCLC users can link from results in EBSCOhost to corresponding records in the WorldCat database. With EBSCO's powerful linking technology, subscribers can activate numerous links as deemed appropriate, including those to databases, e-journals, document delivery and interlibrary loan services, OPACs, book services, commercial linking servers such as SFX and LinkFinderPlus, and many others.
For more than 3 decades, libraries have shared their catalogs electronically to create the OCLC WorldCat database of bibliographic information. WorldCat offers more than 48 million bibliographic records—representing 400 languages—and more than 800 million holdings locations vital for collection development, cataloging, authority control, and retrospective conversion services.
Oliver Pesch, EBSCO's chief technical officer, said: "Initially the WorldCat links will provide holdings information for book records in EBSCOhost databases, with links to WorldCat serials holdings coming in a few weeks. In the future users will be able to launch WorldCat subject searches from within EBSCOhost."
Thomson’s Intelligence Data Transferred to Dialog
Dialog Corp. (http://www.dialog.com) has announced that Thomson's Intelligence Data (http://www.intelligencedata.com) business has been transferred to it. Formerly managed by the Thomson Financial group (http://www.tfn.com), Intelligence Data expands Dialog's reach further into the corporate marketplace's strategic intelligence, competitive intelligence, and marketing departments. The Intelligence Data product line includes IntraScope, InSite, First Call's morning meeting note content, and Intelliscope—the flagship product that features Investext's broker research. IntraScope offers this content directly to business intranets, while InSite delivers Gale Group trade journals and company profile data.
"The Intelligence Data business is complementary to Dialog, and its addition to the Dialog portfolio supports our goal to provide the broadest and most powerful e-information solutions to our customers worldwide," said Dialog president and CEO Roy M. Martin Jr. "It enhances the array of content, products, and services solutions we are able to offer our customers, much like the 2001 addition of NewsEdge business and products to Dialog's portfolio."
All Intelligence Data employees, the majority of whom are based in Boston, will stay with the organization. The remainder of the staff operates in offices in San Francisco and throughout Europe. Intelligence Data was founded in 1997 as a joint venture between Thomson Financial's First Call and Investext divisions to deliver premium business intelligence to the corporate marketplace.
