Dialog Completes Major Upgrade of Alerting Features

Dialog Corp. has announced that it has completed major enhancements to the Alerts service it offers to users of its DialogClassic, DialogClassic Web, and DialogWeb services. The company said that the upgrades are now available and that there is no change in the fee to maintain Alerts.

The enhancements include the following:

  • The ability to run single Alerts across multiple files of content sources, including those containing intellectual property information such as patents and trademarks

  • Automatic removal of duplicates of the same documents retrieved from multiple files through Alerts

  • More robust options for the delivery of documents containing images

  • Improved scheduling, with a new option to specify when the Alert profile is to be run
Paul Colucci, Dialog senior vice president of product development, said: "For many of our customers, the ability to utilize Alerts is essential to their ability to best put the information we offer to work. It means that important news and competitive intelligence, for example, can be delivered directly to their desktops without them having to sign on and search for it."

ProQuest Completes Digitization of Full Wall Street Journal Backfile

ProQuest Information and Learning has announced the completion of its yearlong project to digitize the complete backfile (1889-1985) of The Wall Street Journal as part of its ProQuest Historical Newspapers program.

"ProQuest has digitized each issue of The Wall Street Journal from cover to coverónot just the news stories and editorials, but also the photos, graphics, and advertisements," said Joe Reynolds, president and CEO of ProQuest Information and Learning. "The resulting database contains more than half a million pages and more than 5 million articles. For the first time ever, academic researchers can search the full historical backfile of The Wall Street Journal online. And they can view the information they seek in its original context. Users see the full page image of the newspaper as it was originally published."

Searchers can use basic keyword, advanced, guided, and relevancy search techniques to pinpoint the information they seek. Or they can browse through issues page by page, as one would browse a printed edition. Search results provide bibliographic information, including date, issue, article headline, page number, and author name (where given). To see the desired article, the user simply chooses it, and the image is displayed as an Adobe PDF file. Users may also choose to display the full page image of any page in any issue.

Full text of The Wall Street Journal dating to 1986 is also available electronically in ASCII full text from ProQuest. Both the archive and the current file are available by subscription on the ProQuest service.
