STN Express Adds Capabilities for Bioscience

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS; has announced the release of STN Express with Discover! 6.01, a new version of its software used by information professionals to access patent, scientific, and technical databases on the STN International network ( The updated version provides added capabilities for bioscience research. Among other new features, STN Express 6.01 will permit launching CAS Registry BLAST to identify a wealth of sequence information in the CAS Registry database and then find related literature and patents. Professional searchers will now also be able to better support users of SciFinder, the desktop research tool for scientists, with the ability to accept answer keys from SciFinder and use them for searching on STN.

The enhancements were made in response to users' requests. Suzan A. Brown, CAS marketing director, said: "Our new BLAST capabilities are well-suited to bioscience research needs, including weekly and biweekly alerts. In addition, post-processing features are better than ever for creating reports and tables from search results."

STN Express is one of several interface options for accessing databases on STN International, the scientific and technical information network. Other options include STN Easy, a Web-based product that offers simplified search features for users who are not experienced STN searchers, and STN on the Web, which provides traditional online access plus the benefits of the Web for professional searchers. CAS operates STN International, a network of scientific and technical databases, in association with FIZ Karlsruhe in Germany and the Japan Science and Technology Corp.

EBSCOhost Now Compatible with AGent

EBSCO Publishing and Auto-Graphics, Inc. ( have announced a partnership that allows users of the Auto-Graphics AGent system to tap into a library's EBSCOhost resources. Auto-Graphics is a supplier of library automation software and electronic publishing solutions.

Not to be confused with commercial linking servers, AGent is a tool that allows librarians to simultaneously search multiple databases and other resources (as subscribed to by the library). It creates a single entry point to library resources and automatically validates a researcher for access to these materials. This system enables users to launch a search across databases and other reference resources, yet view results in their native result screen and format, thus ensuring copyright compliance. Researchers using AGent would retrieve results from EBSCOhost databases—complete with EBSCOhost native navigation tools, display pages, etc.—while still within the realm of the AGent system. In addition, AGent supports a variety of delivery formats, including EBSCOhost Z39.50 MARC, SUTRS, and its native format.
