New Strategic Drugs Database Launches

Current Drugs (, part of The Thomson Corp., announced the launch of the Strategic Drugs database (SDdb). The new database merges scientific and clinical information with marketplace and financial information by leveraging additional Thomson information sources, including Thomson Financial and Micromedex.

According to the company, SDdb allows business and marketing executives to analyze current and predicted sales of the leading prescription drugs using a suite of graphical analysis tools. In addition, these high-level financial analyses are combined with the ability to drill-down to the underlying fundamental scientific data that defines the sales prospects of drugs on the market today and in the research and development pipeline. At a time when the pharmaceutical companies are under pressure to bring innovative new products to market with increased efficiency, SDdb can help business and professional customers make better decisions and make them faster.

A premium-service version of the SDdb is also available that provides to customers a daily monitoring service, covering major scientific journals, news, and business sources. Information captured by SDdb editors is then assessed against a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis of the drug and its nearest competitors. Customers are then alerted to any new information likely to impact this analysis.

SLA Names New Executive Director

The Special Libraries Association (SLA) announced that Janice R. Lachance has been selected to serve as its next executive director. She will assume the responsibilities on July 1, 2003, with her first public appearance as director-designate at SLA's Annual Conference, June 7-12 in New York. (During this meeting, members will be voting on whether to retain its current name, which includes the word "libraries," or change it to one of the two options suggested by the Branding Task Force: Information Professionals International, Inc. or SLA, Inc.)

In making the announcement, the organization noted that Lachance brings to SLA a wealth of diverse experience. For the past 2 years, she has been consulting with nonprofit and membership organizations in the areas of strategic planning, organizational development/transformation, and culture change. From 1993 until January 2001, she held a variety of positions within the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the federal government's human resources agency, starting as the director of Communications and Policy and serving as the agency's director from 1997 until 2001.

Prior to her OPM experience, Lachance worked with the American Federation of Government Employees. She also served on the staff of a number of members of the U.S. House of Representatives, including Tom Daschle. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Manhattanville College, Purchase, N.Y., and a J.D. degree from Tulane University School of Law, New Orleans.

Interwoven Acquires MediaBin

Interwoven, Inc., a provider of enterprise content management solutions, announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MediaBin, a digital asset management (DAM) company. The two companies had integrated their products in October 2002, and together now have an integrated digital brand management solution.
