ALA Seeks Testing Input on Site Search Engine

The American Library Association (ALA) is currently seeking user input on its site's search engine. ALA's Information Technology & Telecommunication Services (ITTS) and Web Advisory Committee have identified six potential candidates to replace the existing search engine on its site. A test site has been posted at According to information at the site, each candidate was selected based on scalability, ease of indexing, ease of management, and the basic relevance of results retrieved. Three of the tools are open source, and three are proprietary products.

ALA is asking its members, users of ALA's Web site, and the online community at large to evaluate the tools and complete a brief survey found at the site. Testing will be open until Nov. 12, 2004. The search engines available for testing are:

  • ASPseek, an open source search engine developed by SWsoft and licensed as free software under the GNU General Public License
  • DataparkSearch, an open source search engine released under the GNU General Public License
  • Verity Ultraseek
  • Google Search Appliance
  • Thunderstone Search Appliance
  • Verity K2 search engine, currently in use on the site, which comes bundled with the version of ColdFusion (application server) currently being used to run the ALA Web site
