Project MUSE Announces New Titles and Pricing
Project MUSE (http://muse.jhu.edu), an online collection of scholarly journals in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, has announced two new journal collections (Basic Research and Basic Undergraduate) and subscription prices for 2005. The new journal collections join the three existing options: Full Collection, Arts & Humanities, and Social Sciences. The new journal collections are subsets of the Full Collection. And, following an extensive pricing study, MUSE is introducing a new pricing model for U.S. academic institutions. The Project has also increased its coverage to more than 270 scholarly journals.
The new pricing model replaces deep consortia discounts that were based on volume purchasing, instead offering peer-institution-based pricing that combines criteria reflecting relative value and actual usage. Libraries continue to have the option of subscribing on a title-by-title basis to any journal for which the publisher has opted to have MUSE sell single titles, at rates set by the publishers. Libraries may also subscribe to single titles in addition to holding a collection subscription. MUSE will continue to offer a consortium flex plan, providing groups of at least five libraries, selecting customized collections of at least 100 titles, a special price based on the custom collection and number of participants.
Managed by the Johns Hopkins University Press, in collaboration with the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University and the participating publishers, Project MUSE currently provides online access to more than 270 titles from some 50 publishers to nearly 1,200 subscribing libraries worldwide.

PubSub Launches New Features for Blog Tracking Service
PubSub Concepts, Inc. announced that its "matching engine"—online for free at http://www.pubsub.com—is now tracking more than 6.5 million Weblogs, which the company said makes it "the Internet's most comprehensive blog-monitoring service." The New York-based company, which is celebrating its second anniversary, also debuted a new, easy-to-use Web interface that offers new features for users.
PubSub's Internet-scale matching engine is a "prospective" search tool that complements traditional "retrospective" search engines. PubSub's prospective search matches user requests against new documents as they're published—in real time, all the time. Every day, PubSub's matching engine performs billions of matches of new items against user subscriptions. The instant a match is made, PubSub alerts the user via RSS (really simple syndication) or through the instant messaging (IM)-based PubSub Sidebar, now available as a plug-in for the Firefox and Internet Explorer Web browsers.
PubSub monitors more than 6.5 million blogs, as well as 50,000 USENET newsgroups, all SEC/EDGAR filings, press releases from major wire services, and FAA airport delay alerts. PubSub's RSS and ATOM feeds are compatible with Web-based news aggregators like Bloglines and My Yahoo! as well as desktop aggregators like NewsGator, FeedDemon, and Gush.

Kompass Adds Download Feature and New Portal Access
Business information provider Kompass has launched a new download feature for its search engine (http://kompass.co.uk) and a new portal product. Subscribers to the Kompass online service can now refine searches using more than 28 criteria, including location, size, industry type, then export data from the Kompass database of 1.85 million industrial and commercial businesses worldwide to their desktops instantly. Records can be exported as CSV or TXT documents. The site still offers free searching for basic information.
Kompass Extranet is a new customized portal to the Kompass database. Accessed through an organization's own intranet, Kompass Extranet is designed for companies that operate from multiple locations and need a number of departments to have access to the information resource.
Kompass supplies business data on international markets and some 1.85 million companies in 75 countries via its directories, CDs, and Web site. Since 1944, Kompass has grown from a single directory into a global information provider, used by thousands of buyers, marketers, and businesspeople to find suppliers, research markets, and launch new products. The company is demonstrating the new features at the Online Information exhibition in London, Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
