Thomson Gale Module Shows Healthcare Trends

Thomson Gale (http://www.gale.com) introduced the Disease Profiler Module, a new addition to the Health and Wellness Resource Center product family. The module is the product of an agreement with Thomson Medstat, also a Thomson Corp. company. Disease Profiler is a collection of health-related statistics gathered anonymously from the healthcare programs of more than 50 large companies from across the nation. The initial launch of Disease Profiler details the period from 1998 to 2003, with annual updates to expand the scope of coverage.

The statistics capture how approximately 3 to 4 million active or retired employees use their employers' healthcare system each year. The cost of care, disease prevalence, and demographic information related to disease diagnoses are some of the insights provided by this view into the U.S. healthcare system. Students and patients have the ability to look at trends in healthcare in the same place they're accessing general information about diseases and treatments already available in the parent Health and Wellness Resource Center.

Presented in charts and graphs, Disease Profiler data is organized in two databases: The Commercial Claims and Encounters Database collects data reflecting the healthcare needs of the actively employed population and their dependents; the Medicare Supplemental and COB Database collects data reflecting retired individuals' use of employer-paid Medicare supplemental insurance.
