Google ( wanted its philanthropic efforts ( to eventually have a greater impact than the company itself, so it committed 1 percent of its profits and equity to that cause. Now, Google is providing an update of its philanthropic activities on its Web site. includes projects managed by the company, using Google talent, technology, and other resources. An example is the Google Grants program, which gives free advertising to selected nonprofits. To date, Google Grants has donated $33 million in advertising to more than 850 nonprofit organizations in 10 countries.

Google said it intends to follow through with the commitment of donating and investing 1 percent of profits. The first cash donation of $90 million has been made to the Google Foundation with a commitment of up to $175 million during the next 3 years for other efforts.

PayPal to Acquire VeriSign’s Payment Gateway Business;

eBay ( and VeriSign ( recently announced an alliance on payment services and security initiatives for e-commerce. Under the agreement, PayPal, an eBay company, will acquire VeriSign’s payment gateway business and combine it with PayPal’s leading merchant services platform.

VeriSign will also provide eBay and PayPal with security services that include the deployment of two-factor authentication, a security system that gives customers a one-time password or digital certificate to help protect against online identity theft.

eBay and VeriSign have also signed a security technology agreement that calls for eBay to invest in the deployment of VeriSign technologies to enable and protect online transactions, including buying up to 1 million two-factor authentication tokens. eBay and PayPal plan to begin the rollout of two-factor authentication to customers in 2006, including marketing and security programs designed to promote customer adoption.

CSA Enhances Social Science Databases with Scholar Profiles

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA; is sponsoring free access to the new Scholar Universe: Social Science service for CSA social science database customers through the CSA Illumina platform. These records—verified author and faculty profiles—are provided by Scholar Universe, a business unit of ContentScan, Inc.

"Providing keyword to community access through these authoritative profiles greatly enhances social science researchers' effectiveness and makes the CSA databases even more indispensable," said CSA president Matt Dunie.

Scholar Universe: Social Science represents the first time more than 100,000 social scientists have been brought together with their publication records in a format that is verified, regularly updated, and fully searchable. Researchers can now search for relevant information beyond the document record to reach the people and organizations working to increase knowledge in specific interest areas.
