CSA Acquires Community of Science

CSA (http://www.csa.com) has acquired Community of Science (COS; http://www.cos.org), a site for the global R&D community that specializes in grant funding opportunities and researcher expertise information. COS, originally a spinoff of The Johns Hopkins University, represents more than 1,300 universities, associations, and other research institutions comprising more than 480,000 scholars and researchers.

COS builds Web-enabled expertise management and content services to connect its members with scholarly information and resources. COS services include COS Expertise, the inventory and network of detailed, first-person profiles of scientists and scholars; COS Funding Opportunities, an inventory of currently available grant information; COS Abstract Management System, an online publishing and meeting management solution for universities and professional societies; and several research literature indexes. While maintaining users' current access to the COS products, these products will also be integrated into CSA Illumina, CSA's access platform.

Jeff Baer, current president of COS, will continue to lead this organization as it becomes a division of CSA. Baer will report to Matt Dunie, president of CSA. The COS offices are based in Baltimore, Md.

Scirus to Index Institute of Physics Publishing Journals

Elsevier (http://www.elsevier.com) announced that its free science-specific search engine, Scirus (http://www.scirus.com), has partnered with Institute of Physics Publishing (IOP) to index the full text and metadata of its journals. IOP is a learned society publisher specializing in physics and related disciplines, with a journals list dating back to 1874. IOP is part of a not-for-profit organization (Institute of Physics; http://www.iop.org) and is dedicated to science communication. Content from IOP is clearly identified on the Scirus results page and can be searched as a separate source.

IOP publishes the well-known Journal of Physics series, as well as journals from 14 international publishing partners. Scirus has indexed all of IOP's journals and the majority of the titles from its partners dating back to Volume 1, issue 1. Elsevier said the addition of IOP's 200,000 full-text articles to Scirus' more than 2 million physics-related articles reinforces Scirus' comprehensiveness in the area of physics. The index includes physics titles from the American Institute of Physics and Elsevier, as well as preprints from arXiv.

Mondosoft Adds XML Converter

Mondosoft (http://www.mondosoft.com) has added XML conversion capability to its enterprise search suite with the launch of MondoSearch XML Converter as an add-on to its site search engine, MondoSearch. It lets MondoSearch users index and search XML content in one step.

The new MondoSearch XML Converter transforms XML documents to HTML and integrates seamlessly with MondoSearch v. 5.2, allowing users to perform searches and display information stored in XML without adding extra applications. With the new MondoSearch XML Converter, system integrators and end users can work in different programming environments and unlock the value of XML content by converting, manipulating, and indexing XML content directly from their Content Management System (CMS) or home page to improve site search performance.

MondoSearch XML Converter is available for free download by Mondosoft partners at http://partner.mondosoft.com until Jan. 31, 2006.
