Yahoo! Launches New Go Suite of Products
Yahoo! (http://www.yahoo.com) announced the launch of Yahoo! Go, a new suite of products that extend the company's reach beyond the Web browser. Yahoo! Go services (http://go.yahoo.com) are designed to make the most of the functionality available on consumers' devices and give them the freedom to go wherever they want and have their information and content close at hand. Yahoo! has established relationships with a number of partners to bring the Yahoo! Go suite of services to consumers, including equipment manufacturers, wireless providers, and telecommunications companies.
Yahoo! Go Mobile is a set of applications—Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Messenger, Photos, calendar, address book, Web and image search, news, sports, and finance—for mobile phones. It will be available to consumers in select markets in the coming weeks. Yahoo! Go TV will deliver personalized services to the PC-connected television. The company expects to launch Yahoo! Go TV services in the coming months. Yahoo! Go Desktop is a suite of applications that will connect users to information without having to open a browser window on their PC. The initial services available as part of Yahoo! Go Desktop will be the Yahoo! Widgets Engine and a Yahoo! Go Desktop dashboard. There are more than 1,500 Widgets available today, and the company expects to make the Yahoo! Go Desktop dashboard available in the coming months.Source: Yahoo!, Inc.
Readex Adding to Digitized Early American Newspapers
Readex (http://www.readex.com), a division of NewsBank, Inc. and a publisher of online historical collections, announced that it will begin publishing Early American Newspapers, Series II, 1758-1900 and Series III, 1829-1922 in March 2006. Complementing Early American Newspapers, Series I, 1690-1876, these new series offer fully searchable digital facsimiles of more than 350 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century newspapers, totaling nearly 3 million pages. These and all Archive of Americana collections are published in cooperation with the American Antiquarian Society (AAS).
While many of the 650-plus titles in Early American Newspapers, Series I were printed in the 18th century, the historical newspapers in Series II and Series III are diverse chronologically and geographically. The titles in Series II focus on the period between 1820 and 1860, when the number of American newspapers rose dramatically, transformed by an increasing emphasis on local society, industry, scientific and technological advances, crime, investigative journalism, and stories of human interest. The titles in Series III focus on the period between 1861 and 1900, reflecting the further growth of newspapers in number and in size following the formation of the Associated Press, during and after the Civil War, and throughout the period of westward expansion. Both new series offer newspapers from all 50 states.
AOL Gains Video Search Engine
America Online, Inc. (http://www.corp.aol.com) announced it has acquired Internet video search pioneer Truveo, Inc. (http://www.truveo.com). Financial terms were not disclosed. Truveo was previously privately held and financed by strategic venture and angel investors. Truveo, based in Burlingame, Calif., was co-founded by CEO Tim Tuttle and CTO Adam Beguelin in January 2004. Truveo subsequently launched its video search engine technology in September 2005.
Truveo uses a proprietary Web crawling technology called Visual Crawling. This technology has enabled Truveo to amass a comprehensive index of high-quality, current video on the Web. The companies say the strength of Truveo's Visual Crawling is its ability to automatically discover video files and related information on complex, dynamic Web pages—a task that has been notoriously challenging for existing conventional crawling technologies. Truveo's technology continuously crawls the most popular video content sites on the Web in real time to provide consumers with the most updated and relevant results that include breaking news, sports, and entertainment video. And, as a result of this approach, Truveo's video search engine includes a large selection of popular video that reportedly cannot be found in any other search engine.
Truveo will be integrated within AOL's existing search and video products (http://aol.com/video) in the coming months, to deliver a single, video "one-stop-shop" search experience. AOL purchased Seattle-based Singingfish in November 2003 and launched its AOL Video Search in June 2005.
