SocArXiv Debuts in Beta

SocArXiv officially launched in beta. Built on the Open Science Framework, this OA, open source archive of sociology and social science content is a free way to share academic papers and research results and to upload data and code. Social scientists can make their work discoverable by search engines and available to other researchers. There are currently more than 600 papers on the platform that have been downloaded 10,000-plus times.

HighWire Press has acquired Semantico to bolster its scholarly publishing business via Semantico’s technology innovations, publishing expertise, and products that conform to industry best practices.

Elsevier Adds Metrics to Scopus

Elsevier introduced CiteScore metrics to the Scopus abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, giving researchers access to a holistic overview of more than 22,000 journals from 5,000-plus publishers to help them decide which journals to publish in and which ones to subscribe to. These metrics can also be useful for librarians managing their collections and editors developing journals. Many of the metrics are updated monthly and are freely available for all regularly published literature in Scopus.

The Majority of Americans Trust Online Reviews

Thomson Reuters announced the results of a survey by FindLaw and Super Lawyers on online reviews. It shows that 87% of consumers trust online reviews when choosing local businesses or services to support, as well as professional services (such as lawyers). The result for Millennials and Gen Xers (ages 18–51) is 91% who trust these reviews; 83% of Baby Boomers do. More women than men do (89% to 85%).

ACRL Provides New Information Literacy Resource

The ACRL Framework for Information Literacy Sandbox is now live. This freely available platform and repository allows librarians and their educational partners to collaborate on work relating to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, such as instruction materials and professional development resources. Users can browse for or contribute materials and network with other librarians who are working on similar topics. They don’t have to log in to search, but will need a contributor account to get the most value from the sandbox.
