LIBLICENSE Model License Agreement Gets a Makeover
The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) collaborated with the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and others to publish a revised LIBLICENSE Model License Agreement. This updated license incorporates library best practices as well as advice from legal and publishing professionals with the goal of helping library investment in e-resources pay off. It also includes an outline of the main provisions a library e-resources content license should have and key negotiation points for discussions with publishers.
The release of updated Create Your Own License software—based on the revised model license—is expected in early 2015.

TLC and Quipu Group Enhance Patron Registration Services
The Library Corp. (TLC) and Quipu Group teamed up so that libraries can use updated CARL•X web service APIs to implement Quipu Group’s eCARD patron registration and verification system. eCARD grants or blocks registration based on patrons’ address data and offers a self-service patron registration interface.
The partnership resulted in the development of the full-featured Patron Services API that uses an online form to transmit data to eCARD, which then validates and standardizes addresses and submits the information to be processed via CARL•X. This procedure makes registration easy for patrons and increases staff members’ efficiency. CARL•X is an open system with APIs that do not charge additional costs to libraries or their third-party developers.

Reprints Desk Runs Limited-Time Promotion
Reprints Desk announced a promotion for users of Atlas Systems, Inc.’s ILLiad Resource Sharing Management software. ILLiad users (and new Reprints Desk customers) who install Reprints Desk’s document delivery browser plug-in for their libraries by Feb. 28, 2015 will receive a selection of two free articles that total up to $100.
These articles must be single, full-text copies of scholarly research papers submitted via Reprints Desk’s A-Z Academic Document Delivery Collection add-on for ILLiad. The collection features articles from more than 40,000 publications.
“Libraries at research-based universities are under intense pressure to evolve their collection development strategies to provide ‘just in time’ rather than ‘just in case’ access for growing faculty and student populations,” says Ian Palmer, Reprints Desk’s chief sales and marketing officer. “Reprints Desk’s special copyright royalty rates can help academic libraries provide this access. Scopus Adds New Features
Elsevier’s Scopus database introduced two new features: a redesigned header for increased interoperability with Elsevier’s benchmarking and analytics product SciVal; and Impact per Publication (IPP), a new metric for comparing and evaluating journals.
SciVal is built on top of Scopus data, allowing users to compare and benchmark institutions, research areas, and researchers. Now users of both tools can easily switch back and forth between them. The IPP metric, which helps researchers and librarians decide where to publish, was added to the Scopus Compare Journals tool and other Scopus locations where applicable.
3M Cloud Library App Introduces E-Audiobooks
3M Cloud Library has updated its patron app to include e-audiobooks. It features 40,000 titles from all of the major audiobook publishers (powered by Findaway World). The 3M Cloud Library app was optimized for e-audiobook discovery, checkout, and listening. For example, bookmarks allow users to listen to their titles across a range of devices that support the app.
Other key upgrades to the app include customizable features for personalized browsing, a redesigned interface that enables users to flag their favorite content types and sort titles into custom categories, and updated terminology and feature descriptions.

Zepheira Teaches Libraries About Linked Data and BIBFRAME
Zepheira developed an online training program, Linked Data and BIBFRAME for Libraries, which is focused on the applied use of those vocabularies. The program lasts 4–5 weeks and is typically offered twice per month via Zepheira’s learning management environment. Libraries that register for January’s special group sessions by Dec. 19 will receive early access to course materials.
Linked data and BIBFRAME are designed to help the web find and reflect libraries’ offerings. Zepheira decided that libraries should have a baseline of knowledge and awareness about how to begin using them, so it created the program to offer content from industry experts. There are also online discussions and locally focused exercises in the course. After the training is completed, libraries can participate in alumni discussions and retain access to course content and tool updates.
Axiros Helps Yamaha Reach More Customers
Axiros integrated its automatic device provisioning and management services, AXACT and AXESS, into Yamaha Corp.’s line of business and enterprise network devices. Yamaha aimed to add device management features and functionality to its products in order to expand into international markets.
“Yamaha closely evaluated Axiros’ experience, achievement and technological capabilities and found a perfect match for our need to keep up with the rapidly changing demands of the network device market,” says Shigetomo Nakamura, Yamaha’s sound network development division manager.
