LibraryThing Offers One Million Free Book Covers
LibraryThing (www.librarything.com), the social network book cataloging site, is now offering 1 million book covers free for libraries to enhance their OPACs. It requires a one-time application for a LibraryThing Developer’s Key, available for free to members. The covers have been uploaded by users. The site also announced it has hit 30 million books catalogued by its members.Libraries must agree to some very limited terms: - Libraries may not make LibraryThing cover images available to others in bulk, but they may cache bulk quantities of covers.
- Libraries may retrieve up to 1,000 covers per day.
- Use does not involve or promote a LibraryThing competitor.
- If covers are fetched through an automatic process (i.e., not by people hitting a webpage), libraries may not fetch more than one cover per second.
- Libraries are not required to link back to LibraryThing, but it would be appreciated.
LibraryThing, which launched in 2005, offers a web-based application for users to catalog their personal book collections. LibraryThing for Libraries lets libraries involve their patrons and enhance their catalogs with reviews, ratings, and tags. Source: LibraryThing

Posted By Tim Spalding8/14/2008 2:17:33 AMMinor update/correction: We now allow 5,000 covers/day, and it's not total covers but covers "made." Most covers you hit, and any you hit more than once, will already be made, and are therefore "free." Most libraries shouldn't hit the limit.
The "made" concept was designed to come in handy when we introduce bespoke sizes (eg., give me the cover at exactly 143 pixels wide). We don't want a library turning our servers into non-stop image resizing boxes.
