ProQuest ‘Rescues’ the Statistical Abstract of the United States
by Marydee Ojala
The U.S. government's March 2011 announcement that budget cuts would cause the termination of the Statistical Abstract of the United States after 133 years brought howls of anguish from librarians, researchers, journalists, and others who depended upon "StatAbs," as it is affectionately known, to aggregate statistics on almost any topic imaginable. It now appears the howls were heard and acted upon by ProQuest (www.proquest.com). Deeming it a "rescue" action, ProQuest announced on March 22, 2012, that it would publish the next edition of this statistical icon in conjunction with Bernan Press (www.bernan.com), an imprint of The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc. Bernan will be responsible for printing, marketing, and distributing the book. ProQuest will handle collection, indexing, and digital publishing.

CLOCKSS Archive to Preserve American Mathematical Society Epublications
The CLOCKSS Archive announced a partnership with the American Mathematical Society (AMS) to preserve its ejournals and ebooks in CLOCKSS's geographically and geopolitically distributed network of redundant archive nodes located at 12 major research libraries around the world. This action provides for content to be freely available to everyone after a "trigger event" and ensures an author's work will be maximally accessible and useful over time.

FTC Recommends Best Practices for Consumer Privacy Protection
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a final report setting forth best practices for businesses to protect the privacy of American consumers and to give them greater control over the collection and use of their personal data. In the report, "Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change: Recommendations for Businesses and Policymakers," the FTC also recommends that Congress consider enacting general privacy legislation, data security and breach notification legislation, and data broker legislation.

Update on Political Fact-Check Websites
by Paula J. Hane
As I write this, the U.S. is in the midst of a hotly contested GOP presidential primary. The countdown to "Super Tuesday" is 6 days, and the countdown to the election is 251 days. Some days, I think I've just had enough election news. It's exhausting for a voting individual to examine all the claims and statements made by the candidates. How do we keep up with who said what and check to see if it contradicts their earlier statements or twists the facts/statistics? Hardly a day goes by that I don't see an article that questions or outright refutes something said in a speech or debate. But which sites can we believe?
