The New York Times Acquires Baseline Service

The New York Times Co. (http://www.nytco.com) announced that it has completed the acquisition of Baseline StudioSystems (http://www.blssi.com) from Hollywood Media Corp. (http://www.hollywood.com) for $35 million in cash. Baseline, an online database and research service for the film and television industries, charges subscribers for access to more than 1.5 million records with facts, analysis, statistics, news, contacts, and trends on the entertainment industry.

The acquisition extends the Times Co.'s reach into the entertainment world and adds a source of subscription income to the company's Internet operations. Subscriptions account for three-quarters of the $6 million in revenue that the Times Co. expects Baseline to receive this year. Subscribers to Baseline include movie studios, television production companies, advertising agencies, public relations firms, media buying agencies, universities, law firms and various media outlets. Baseline also has a growing syndication/licensing business that provides nonprofessional entertainment information to consumer-oriented Web sites.

Baseline will be a separate division of The New York Times Media Group. It will continue to operate out of Santa Monica, Calif., where it has 50 employees. Its two top executives, Rafi Gordon, the president, and Alex Amin, the executive vice president, will report to Vivian Schiller, senior vice president and general manager of NYTimes.com.
