Readex Launches New Interface for Newspaper Collections

Readex (, a publisher of online historical collections and a division of NewsBank, Inc. (, announced the release of a new interface for its Web-based America's Historical Newspapers collection, which includes Early American Newspapers, Series I, II and III, 1690-1922. It enables cross-searching of the papers. The new interface provides a simpler, more intuitive search screen and other new features designed to make searching easier and more productive for both novice and experienced users.

The collection, part of Readex's Web-based Archive of Americana, offers fully searchable reproductions of more than 500,000 complete issues from more than 1,000 historical American newspapers published in all 50 present states—totaling more than 5 million pages. Digitized primarily from the extensive historical newspaper holdings of the American Antiquarian Society (AAS), the Wisconsin Historical Society, and the Library of Congress, America's Historical Newspapers is designed for researching American history, culture, and daily life over several centuries.

The new interface provides a clickable map of the U.S. to help limit searches by state and region; preconfigured options for Presidential Eras and Eras in American History that limit searches by timeframe and snippets—or targeted previews—of articles within search results to help users understand context and save time.
